Help! Sis is bringing over chick-UPDATE IN LAST POST :(

Quote:
THANK YOU for posting this. I gave it boiled egg last night, but this morning I switched it out for mashed layer pellets, right before I got on here! I pulled that out right away and gave it the ground oatmeal/cormeal.

And no, you are not the only one that thinks someone is crazy to give him a chick. I am glad she brought it here, even though I really don't need another living thing to take care of. It would have been dead by morning.

The only light fixture I had that is not attached to the ceiling, was a night light. I hung that from and extension cord down low in a plastic bin and made a nest of washcloths under it. Probably not warm enough, but all I had. As soon as the feed store opens, I will go get supplies.

Thank you all so much for your help. I know nothing about chicks, as my hens were given to us full grown. It great to have a place to go for help.

You're very welcome! I'm glad you got the pellets out of there so fast. If your feed store has books, look for Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens. It's so full of info, I don't think I could live without it. If your feed store doesn't have it (mine doesn't carry books but I know others do), you can get it on Amazon.com. I know I sound like a commercial, but between that book and these boards, I doubt you'd come across a problem you couldn't solve!

Speaking of cute and cuddly:

The markings look like EE to me (looking at the McMurray catalog) Sis was told the dad was a "red rooster"

(She also said, I think it's a boy, cause they said the dad was a rooster")

Is that how it works? How do pullets get born, I wonder? Hahaha!

Those are some adorable pictures! Love the one of it snoozing in your dh's hand. Too cute!

OHHH! So tiny and cute! Probably a bantam of some sort. If I were you, I wouldn't give the chick back, what a cuddle bug!! Now I can't wait until my chicks get here! Exactly one week

What a cutie! I'm glad you were able to take it. Who knows what would have happened to it if you hadn't!

Angie- Your daughter is so cute!! What a good hen... just hanging out with her feet dangling!

If you need more heat until you can make a store run, a rice sock slightly heated or a soda bottle filled with warm water helps. I cover them with cotton fabric dish towels...the smooth fabric type.

I also put the rice sock in at night for the lone chick and they will cuddle up to it an sleep.

Wow how adorable!

Just wanted to mention that chicks HATE to be alone. Maybe you could hang a little mirror (like a bird mirror?) in the box for her to help keep her company. Other people also use a little stuffed toy.

I agree, I can't imagine getting a tiny chick for a two year old! My three year old has to be VERY closely supervised around the chicks (and my 5yo is supervised, also, although he's been great, and 'his' chick is one of the friendliest in the brood). I don't honestly think pets are appropriate for kids this age, anyway, since they don't understand the difference between pet/toy.

Good luck! Sounds like your doing great!

I've noticed it loves to be held. It settles right down when I cuddle it close, and chirps loudly at first when put back. If I put my hand in the box, it runs and jumps into my hand.
When I read the suggestion of the stuffed animal, my dd ran and got her little stuffed chick from Easter and asked to put it in.

Here's the setup I came up with. Let me know if I need to change anything.

The bulb is a 40w clear bulb. I put a thermometer on the floor of the box for awhile. It read 93.

Thank you SO Much for all your help!
