Help! Sis is bringing over chick-UPDATE IN LAST POST :(

Looks like a great setup to me--lots of room! Did your daughter put the stuffed chick in? Maybe you could also put in a little mirror from a make-up compact--those things snap right off. Also love the warm rice-sock idea--gives it something to cuddle with. I use one of those for a heat pack on my neck; dunno why I didn't think of it to keep the baby warm!

The chick looks like s/he's in great hands now!

You guys are definitely missing the whole point of this forum!!! Aren't we supposed to be feeding our addictions??? Now, you just take that stuffed animal away, and march yourself right down to the feed store and buy a few more chicks to keep your adorable little one company!!! Doesn't that sound more like the advice we chicken addicts should be giving???? (yes, I'm laughing as I type this. I'd use the little smilie things, but I don't know how - I'm too busy playing with my chickens and chicks to learn!!!)

Chicky is definitely more active and alert (in cycles). Yesterday afternoon, I picked it up and held it to me. It climbed out of my hands, up my chest, and to my shoulder be for I could blink!

I never see it eat or drink, but it must be. It only poo'd once during the first 12 hours I had it. Since I got its crate set up and chick feed, I've found lots of poos. So s/he must be eating/drinking right?

It tends to fall asleep at the drop of a hat, is that normal? It will be walking around, then it's head will droop, and eyes will close and it will drop. Often a few seconds later it opens its eyes a chirps a bit then it's out again.

Also, I noticed it has something that looks exactly like a dried umbilical stump just below its vent. Chicks don't have umbilical cords, so what is it?

Sorry so many ???, haven't had a chick before, and my chicken book doesn't have much info about chicks.

By the way, s/he loves the mirrors. I often look in to see it talking to itself in the mirror and pecking at it. Occasionally it snuggles or pecks the stuffed chick, but usually it sleeps next to the mirror.

We asked dh if we could get another chick to keep it company.

He laughed. Then a moment later he says, "When you buy them at the feed store, can they tell for sure it is a girl?"

IOPELE Don't believe everything you read concerning layer pellets. The book you refer to is very good, but chicks raised by mom will eat layer from about the third day along with bugs and other food mom shows it and thrive. In 22 years I have never lost a chick because they accessed the same food mom did.

AZmama,
Cute little set-up you have there. Glad chicky is doing good. You should definitely get your chicky some friends, so he/she won't be alone. You'll have to tell your dh that everyone on here said that you MUST get at least one more chick for the mental health of the chick.

Sorry, can't answer any of your questions though, I bet someone will be able too.

Power naps are common for chicks.

The dried stump you see is the remains of the yolk sac the chick feeds off while in the egg.

If there is fecal material then it is eating and drinking.

tell you hubby that if you buy 3 one of them is bound to be a girl!!!

Here's chicky with his "friends" yesterday.

So, yesterday my dh was late coming home from work. After I read him some posts here about getting a friend for chicky, he gets a sheepish grin, and says, "Well the feed store is out of pullets, but they are getting 400 tomorrow."

So here's chicky with it's friend today:

She's a black australorp (we hope). The feed store had the barred rocks and the australorps mixed together.

So, cute!
(So do I bill my sis for the new chick? After all, it was a "necessary supply" to care for her chick!)

How adorable! I love your pictures!

Your new baby does not look like my barred rocks, so hopefully is an Australorp!

Gawd how cute! Your dh deserves a hug and a kiss, that's for sure!
