Help! Slight prolapse? *UPDATE*

I was out with the ducks and noticed something looked wrong with Pheoebe's backside. It looked like part of her was sticking out, so I managed to pick her up and it does look like some sort of slight prolapse

I also noticed one of the other girls has pecked at it a couple of times. They all laid their eggs fine this morning and she's pooing and acting normal, but I'm really worried! What should I do!?

Put some Preperation H on it & push it back in.

Can you get that in the UK? Or would anything similar be okay anyway?

Vaseline will work fine. I had to fix a worse prolapse on one of my duck hens and just used vaseline.

I used KY jelly on a reptile prolapse - just made sure to thoroughly wash the area first. Also, swim time was important to strengthen the muscles in that area.

What's your drake to duck ratio? (Do you have drakes?)

They get to swim every day

We do have two boys and 4 girls, but they are seperated indoors and they haven't mated yet - the boys still haven't tried to mate properly with the girls, even though they are a year older than them!

UPDATE: I tried the vaseline thing but I could not push it back in to stay in, so we called up a local vet who recommended us to a more specialist vet in a town about 40 mins away. We made an appointment and then had to rush out to buy a carry-case to take her in, as we've never needed to transport them other than bringing them home as babies! After spending around £80 on that, we drove home and put her in it and set off. She was actually pretty good about it.

When we saw the vet she did some feeling and poking around the vent area and said she thought it is not actually prolapse but maybe just swollen, so was going to prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, however she started feeling further up her body and said she felt a hard lump which didn't feel good and isn't normal. She suggested either:

1. Build-up of urates which she has been unable to pass
2. An egg which hadn't passed and had gone weird
3. A tumor

We agreed for her to stay overnight and then tomorrow to be put under general anaesthetic to have an x-ray done to see what we should do from there. With the first two she said surgery is an option, however if it is a tumor, surgery is possible but she said if that was the case they would advise euthanasia.

The consultation alone was £39! With the added anaesthetic and x-ray it will total around £160, then further surgery if we decide on that could apparently be maybe £200 on top of that! We're very worried but I'm willing to pay if it is worth it. We're all just hoping it's fixable and that she'll be okay

Good news! She's home!

Got a call this morning which I just missed (I even picked up but it must have cut off as I picked up!) from the vet saying she'd laid a large egg this morning and they'd done the x-ray and found nothing abnormal, so it must have been the egg she could feel. She said to call up and speak to another vet (our vet was due to go home after phoning), so called up and they couldn't get hold of this other vet so she said she'd get this vet to call us when she was free. I called about three hours later as I hadn't had a call yet and was worried. Managed to get hold of the vet, who repeated what had happened and said they'd like to worm her and give her antibiotics, but she said to book an appointment to pick Phoebe up later!

Got an appointment and went to get her and actually got to see our vet

She said she'd put a stitch in too but didn't want to do the full stitching around the cloaca because she's consistently laying and it might cause problems for her. We now have Flubenvet wormer (she said we can do it for all the ducks) and Baytril liquid antibiotic to give her orally twice a day for 10 days. Luckily she said not to worry about seperating them, so we got her home, let her in the garden so she could have as wash - she was filthy! - and then let her back in with the other ducks

I'm hoping this stuff works! Finger crossed
