Help! Slow crop/sour crop or something else?!

I removed all food this morning and about an hour ago I massaged her crop although, miraculously, it was flat and felt so much better.

I have then just gone to check she has water and found this in her bowl. I’m not sure if she has brought this up or if it’s come from her other end but she seems perkier in herself! I’m going to keep an eye on her crop and check first thing in the morning after giving her some scrambled egg for supper. I’d love to let her back with her sisters tomorrow as I agree, they can become depressed and I think they’re likely missing each other.

thanks so much for all your help. I’ll keep posting progress or changes!
I agree, it looks like that came out the "other end" LOL
She may have been a bit constipated as well and finally got that out!

If the crop is empty now, I too would think about letting her back with the others if they don't free range. I probably would offer some wet feed, eliminate grass, scratch, etc. for a few days as well. Eggs are a nice treat! They are easy to process and all your birds would probably enjoy that! See how how the crop function goes, if she's empty for a few mornings in a row and she's acting fine, then call it good.

I try to check crops most every morning on all my hens. Either visually or by running a hand down their breast as they come out of the coop. I don't always catch a problem, but I try to take note of how each bird is suppose to "look" and "act" when they are "healthy". A slight differentiation in looks or behavior has often clued me in ahead of the game and I've been able to address some things. Not always, but sometimes. Some things can't be fixed either unfortunately.

Haha okay, it’s unfortunate for her it went in her water then  she’s had some scrambled egg, boiled leftover veg and plenty of water and is currently snoozing. I think I’ll check her crop first thing then pop her back in with the others and keep a close eye. Unbelievably, one of the ducks now has a limp:confused: so that’s something else to monitor! It’s like animal hospital over here lol.

Thanks so much for your advice and taking the time to reply. It’s nice to hear reassurance from others with more experience.

You can almost count of something like that to go into the water LOL

Sorry to hear about the Duck. I don't know a thing about them, so if the limping doesn't get better, then checking in with the folks on the Duck forum would be a good idea.

When it rains, it pours! Sometimes it seems all is going too well, then you suddenly have multiple things going all at once - makes life interesting!

Hi all,

sorry if there are already posts about this elsewhere but I’ve spent the last 4 hours researching and am finding mixed answers. Here’s what’s happened so far to my lovely Henny:

2 days ago my OH noticed she was quiet, hunched up and wanting to be near him when we let her and her sisters (2ducks) out to roam our paddock. She went to bed fine that night.

Yesterday, I noticed her hunched up and facing the wall of their large enclosure. I went to pick her up (she enjoys this!) and liquid poured from her mouth. After much research I messaged her crop (it was soft and liquid-y) and without even tipping her, fluid came out, although it was not smelly at all. Her crop then flattened. We immediately created a little area in our utility for her with water, oyster shell grit and some of her usual food. She also ate scrambled egg with gusto.

This morning her crop was empty and I was so relieved! She seemed much perkier than the day before, although her comb is still limp and flaccid. She has had access to fresh water and has been pecking at her food and has had some warm porridge too. She is quieter than usual (she would normally be escaping and exploring the utility) and is happy to be sat in her drawer filled with bedding. She is pooping, it is white with black lumps or sometimes just watery but white looking.

She is my first hen and we rescued her and her sisters although they’ve all been hand-reared by previous owner. I have no idea what to do next. She seems happy to stay inside which is unlike her. She hasn’t laid an egg now for near on a week and she is a routine layer.

I’ve read that this full crop can be a secondary symptom of something more serious but I can’t see signs of what (or what to look for!). I have bought some worming treatment online as they’ve not yet been wormed while in my care.

Any advice or help would be most welcome. Thanks in advanve
Hi, i give my hens food grade diatomaceous earth to deworm they have access to this 24/7 and 1 tbsp of apple.cider vinegar for every gallon of water. It will rid of any internal parasites, virus and so on. I also dust my coop regularly and whwn cleaning the coop with the diatomaceous earth

So you've had identifiable worms and virus in your flock and the DE and ACV got rid of both?

Thanks so much, I’ll look in to buying them some. I’ve just bought something to mix with their food and some bird friendly coop cleaner.

Update:

Henny is so better this morning, full pouch that feels doughy and makes gurgling noises. When massaging for her, she produced loads of liquid although still no smell to it. Her eyes are now blinking slowly, like her membrane is slow and she’s rubbing her eyes with feet.:(

You left us with a NO!
I wouldn't massage a crop that is full of liquid - did she poop overnight, what was that like?
