HELP! Something ate off the toes of my babies..I'm sick....

I had a raccoon pull the chicks legs off through 1/4" hardware cloth.... THAT was disturbing to find....

Do hope your chicks are doing ok. I would have never would have thought about the wire either. We were not going to name ours either but my granddaughter picked out a favorite and named her Sassy and before I knew it, I named one Peeps. The rest are unnamed but trying hard not to get too attached but it is hard after raising them from a few days old to now...which is 8 weeks.

Good luck, I do hope they heal well.

Best of luck. My first though too would be rats. They eat chicks out from under broodies and won't hesitate to pull toes through. It only takes a split second for a toe go to go missing. My tiel landed on a hamster cage that I was baby sitting once and in the time it took for me to get to the tiel from across the room, the hamster bit off the toe nail on one toe and the bird flew off again. Could have been way worse had the hamster gotten higher up on the foot!

OK well, the outside chicks will be ok for now. ( I hope). I mixed the duramycin (used the search on here and it took me right to the proper info). The really injured ones wouldnt drink, so I fed each of them about 6-8 cc's each with the syringe. They all took it then. My poor "little jo" is in a bad way though. She just lays on her side...

I rewashed their stumps and applied bactoban ,a Rx antibiotic. Its pretty strong stuff.

If I were a drinking lady...

Anybody know how often I should give the fluids? How much is enough for a 6 week old RIR and Buff Orps? Hope they will drink on their own soon.

Well, if it makes ya feel any better, the first two we named are the two Cornish Rocks we got strictly as meat birds. Hard not to name 'em - Thor and Magnus - as they quickly grew to twice the size of the others. They're about ten weeks old now, and I swear, Thor is almost as big as a turkey! While it's funny to watch 'em waddle around the yard, unfortunately it's about time to put some fresh chicken in the freezer.
