Help - Something got my chicks -- WTB Laying Hens to replace

I had six chickens, 3 Black Astralorps, a New Hampshire Red and two mixed breed chicks that were almost ready to lay. Something broke into the pen and now I only have one traumatized Black Australorp left. I don't think she will be too happy without other chickens around, so if anyone has some Australorps or other laying hens in the Raleigh area and would be willing to sell just a couple I would be very appreciative. I am in Chapel Hill and have a terrible raccoon population in my area. Dang things tore into the area under my house, so I must have them living there. Animal Control has been very little help and has threatened me if I start trapping myself. They won't answer my calls now that I am asking for more help. I feel your pain. Sadly, I don't have any adult hens, just a few pullets.

Luckily, no incursions into my coop......yet.

You have to be very careful with Raccoons, I did some research on them, and apparently almost 40% carry rabies. I think a raccoon opened the pen, and got one of the chickens because there was a pile of feathers, but once it was open I think a fox took the rest since there are no more piles of feathers in the yard.

I caught a coon in a live trap a couple of days ago. Set a trap. Sorry about your chickens. I'd be devastated.

It isn't just rabies that can make people sick. They carry a worm that can be transmitted by touching where their saliva was. Children should not play where coons have been. Evidently, coons all over the country are heavily infested now.

ugg I hate coons, before getting more make sure you predator proof your coop cause tey will be back. and trap and kill it if you can or you may loose more. Good Luck!

We have been catching about a coon every day for the past week.

Can you just quietly trap them and not say anything?

If you check our Craigslist, there is a guy in Louisburg who sells all kinds of pullets from common to exotic. I bought 6 EE pullets and he has a nice set-up. You ought to give him a call. He might cut a deal if you are getting a bunch. They were very reasonable.

If a coon is on your property and killing your chickens, you can legally kill it and animal control cant do a thing about it. Shoot first and then call animal control, or fish and game, and let them remove it.
