It's true about chicken wire... Over some time my parents have had both raccoons and one dog break through. We shut them in a secure hen house at night, so there haven't been too many losses, but I know how you feel. Raccoons are pure EVIL behind their cute fur. If you get hardware cloth, get small enough that the coons can't reach through to the chickens. They will pull them bit by bit through.
