help! something is wrong with my cayuga's leg :(

He is getting better! The sores on his foot are healed and the swelling has went down alot! We actually just kept neosporin on his foot and gave him asprin in the morning and and at night. And also put him in warm water to float around for a bit. He still cant put much pressure on it. But with the swelling going down hopefully thats a good sign! :)

This link was given to me when I posted I was giving aspirin to my old drake you may want to stop giving aspirin. Glad to hear he is doing much better keep up with the soaks and neo. also colorless iodine will work too. http://www.duckrescuenetwork.org/DRNBoard/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=168

Omgah thank you so much for telling me that. I hope I didnt hurt him in any way by giving that to him! :(

I was wrong.. its not asprin. It was aleve for joints and arthritis... which im assuming would/could do the same thing an asprin could do to a duck...?

Well, it is not the same chemical structure as aspirin, and I cannot find any reference to its effect on waterfowl. I did see that horses are given naproxen sodium, which is the generic name.

If you are concerned, I wonder if a little food-grade activated charcoal (sold as a supplement) in the water might absorb any of it left in his system.

How is he tonight?

Hes better than he was.. his foot seems healed. Part of his foot and leg joint are still swollen.. but the leg joint has went down alot.

Sounds like infection may have gone into joint which if I was you I'd give an antibiotic for. Penicillin is what I see recc on my med chart for blood born infections from cuts or scrapes. you can get the kind that mixes in water and give for 8-10 days 1/2 to 1 tea. per gal. There maybe other antibiotics that may work as well but not sure which ones, maybe Amiga will know.

You think he still may have infection in his joints... even if the swelling has went down?? Sorry... kinda new at the whole duck thing... he was our first duck so we dont know a whole lot... our 2 perkins are fine with no health issues.

I went back and reread your post, does sound like infection in the joint, I would probably do the antibiotic just because sometimes it can really go systemic and then they won't make it, But you know what's best for him if you feel the swelling has significantly gone down them maybe he is getting over it on his own. About the pond, I would say if you have other manner of fish and turtles you have snappers. They can do a number on water fowl biting off legs and toes/feet. I'd keep your ducks out till you have had a chance to bait and catch them all and either cook up some turtle soup or relocate far away from your pond and ducks.

I honestly think a round of antibiotics might be a good idea or at least have some on hand just in case the swelling gets worse.

Oh there aint no snapping turtles... just regular box turtles. Thanks for ur advice!
