I bought a red light today at Orscheln (their Country Tuff brand) and I didn't notice the "splatterproof" on the box until I went to check them one more time before going to bed. The box was still on the counter and there it was:

"SPLATTERPROOF! Hardened Pyrex R glass designed not to shatter if contacted by liquids."

I unplugged it an went straight online to see if I could find out if this was the dangerous kind. Does anybody know if "splatterproof" is safe? I'm not sure if I should switch back to a clear bulb or not. I will if I have to, but wow, they keep me up all night cheeping!

i don't know of the brand but it should be fine. It's sounds like its designed so if it gets wet it won't shatter. so its a good thing. Think of it like a super hot glass baking dish put in cool water it well explode everywere not that i know from experience [IMG]. It's highly unlikey for a heat light to get wet anyway hanging over a brooder.

Thismorning my two year old touched a cold baby wipe to our new red bulb in the split second I looked away.....shattered all over their brooder box. Ughhhhhhhhhhh

I didn't know a certain bulb could be harmful.

I've read that some are coated to prevent shattering, I guess it's teflon or similar to it. But it can be poisonous. I am assuming that the pyrex ones don't need the coating, except I found another brand online that looks just like mine and states that it is pyrex AND it has a "special coating" to prevent shattering.

I went ahead and switched back to my clear bulb for now; it's too bad because I would have liked a good night's sleep. Between cheeping chicks and a baby waking me to nurse, I'm exhausted!

Oh, and I found that the Country Tuff "brand" is really SLI Lighting. I think they do private labeling because many different store brands look exactly the same and have the same "blurb".
