Help! Squirrel Infestion

A nice .177 or .22 air powered pellet rifle can take a squirrel out no problem if you are a good shot... my brother has taken down adult coons with a single well placed shot to the head with an air rifle from 150 or so feet away. Your daisy red rider might be a bit underpowered though if shooting at a distance. Look for a 1000fps one.

Why not just trap them and take them to a city park? They are apparently easy to trap because my neighbor used to do it and kill them until I stole his traps. I love my backyard full of squirrels! Mine do not bother my chickens, though.
I have not heard about the lack of acorns. Sounds strange to me because down here people are all predicting a horrible winter because of the over-abundance of acorns we have this year. There were so many in my back yard that the lawnmower would not pick them up, and they were too heavy to pick up with a rake because there were so many. I had to rake them into big piles and shovel them up.

Great advice! Thank you! I will trap them and move them. I loved them too until they began to eat all the chicken food. My hens can't even get a good meal before being driven off. I will buy a trap and relocate them.

Trapping and relocating is just giving your problem to someone else. In some areas relocation is illegal as well. Check your local laws.

i have the same issue

my old cat use to catch and kill big squirrels but my current cat is fat and i saw her just sit there and watch a squirrel eat my birds food!

Can one of you please tell me how do we know if a cat is a good squirrel killer?

DO your cats kill adult full grown squirrels?

My barncat Blue has been trying to catch squirrels but he's only 4 months old. I bet when he is full grown he'll be able to bring a full down squirrel easy.

Will Squirrels chew or squeeze through normal chicken wire or plastic chicken wire? If I lined my chainlink run w/ chicken wire, will they chew thru it? We just got the run up, but sadly didn't think about the squirrels in selecting our materials.

Funny what you said about trapping and relocating these pesty squirrels in the winter. The same thing occurred to me that they won't have reserve food burried and that they could starve to death.

I'm trying something new for now. I am mixing scratch, chicken food, and a very large amount of grounded cyanne pepper and putting it in the feeder. I'll see what happens soon enough. Maybe I'll have spicy eggs.
