Hi everyone,
Thank you in advance. & sorry this will be lengthy, but I want to be thourgh so as to get a proper treatment started ASAP. This is day number 2 of swelling. Please no advice of culling.
Here is what has happened:
Bailey is a 3yo silkie rooster. He does not free range as he is small & we have preditors. He has been separated from everyone for maybe 4 weeks now as he had lost a lot of weight & March was cold here. I realized he had quite a parasite load so I dewormed him & everyone else with Wazine (cayenne pepper, garlic, & squash seeds had been given previously apparently to no avail). Dusted him with wood ash & DE once a week for several weeks.
He has been eating game bird feed, cracked corn, yogurt, scrambled eggs, & cooked hamburger. Gave poly-vi-sol wo iron & poultry nitro-drench as needed. Less since he seemed to be doing so well. In a separate cage during the day away from flock to get sun & grass. He gained his weight back, was doing Amazing! In fact, in another night I felt he was ready to go back outside in his run.
In the evening of april 8th I noticed a touch of swelling around the eye tissue. I did nothing to see if it improved overnight. It did not. So I mixed the coconut oil & tea tree eo, applied once on am & once in pm. Also added antibiotics (amoxicillin 500 mg capsule in 1 gallon of water) for his drinking water, in case it was some sort of infection (I no, I no- lots of over medicating happens in general...but there are not any vets who treat chickens in my area & I couldn’t find anything like this anywhere online. So I was guessing).
He does not have any of the following symptoms: no bubbles from eyes or nose, eyes/nose are not watery/runny, no puss pockets around mouth, no black or white spots inside or outside beak, no labored breathing, no loss of appetite, not standing with head sucked into shoulders. Has not been exposed to any chemicals.
He had been active until today, he is napping more today, but still eating. The swelling is worse today, yellow yolk colored splotches have appeared around eyes, swelling is now spread to comb. Some swelling in outsides of both legs with the yellow splotches. Still breathing regularly, eating, but is weaker today. He started losing feathers 2 days ago, like a molt.
Please help, I am at a complete loss of how to help him.

Can you take him to a vet or avian vet? I would look him over for mites or lice. There is something that looks powdery in his feathers. Is that the dust or ash that you have been using? Is he scratching a lot? I would look him over around and under his vent and around his neck for tiny bugs. Ivermectin pour on can be used on the spine to treat mites and lice. Dosage is 0.1 ml for every 2 pounds.

I am kind of baffled by why both eyes and the face are swollen and bumpy. Have you ever had Mareks in your flock, or an unexplained death? The amoxicillin probably will not treat a respiratory or sinus infection. Something like Tylan50 injectable, Baytril, oxytetracyline, denagard, or others feom a vet may be helpful if it is mycoplasma (MG.) Terramycin eye ointment can be purchased at most feed stores by asking a cleak, and Tylan 50 injectable needles and syringes are also available there. Tylan can be given orally as well as by injection. Syringes and needles are used to withdraw it, then remove the needle to give it orally.

As previously stated No vets treat chickens here. He did have parasites that I treated with DE & wood ash. DE was applied last night. He never scratches though there are eggs in the feather quills near the skin. There are no new ones as the ones I see are growing out. I have looked him all over, no creepy crawlers that can be seen with the eye.
No, no diseases or unidentifiable deaths.
According to what I’ve read he has no symptoms oh MG. Although the incubation period is no up yet.
He isn’t showing any signs of respiratory issue as of yet. I’m completely baffled as well.
If the eye itself is not presenting with problems, only the tissue around the eyes, would it be good to use Terramycin? Isn’t that applied to the eye itself? I believe I may have some if you think it will help him. It would surprise me if any of the feed stores carry Tylan 50, they’re kinda lacking in their medicines. Surely I can order online though.
Thanks so much for your input.

Called all the feed stores in the area. Last store told me all otc antibiotics have been pulled several years go due to the state being afraid of over medicating. He also didn’t know of any vets treating chickens. He actually revered me to byc ! I can order online but by the time it gets to me I’m afraid it will be too late. Any ideas on all natural antibiotics. Maybe oregano or garlic??

Tylan 50 is still available in feed stores. It is in the cattle department usually. It can be ordered online. Certain others can be found online for pigeons or fish. Oral antibiotics were removed in 2017 from farm stores. I am not a vet, so I don’t know what is causing the facial swelling. Normally with mycoplasma, it would occur on one side, and later possibly the other if not treated. About the only thing I can think of it that his skin is itchy and the yellow scabs are from that or the lice/mite problem. I would use either ivermectin pour on or permethrin to kiil the lice or mites, and again to get the newly hatched eggs.

Hopefully if others have suggestions, they will chime in.

Idk . I called 6 different feed stores, some more than an hour from me, asked for Tylan 50 specially, they typed it in their computer & said they did not carry it. Maybe they misspelled it...?
I do have Ivermectin & permethrin. In fact I just dipped everyone other than him a few days ago. I was afraid the permethrin would be to strong for him since his immune system has been dealing with a lot lately.
I think maybe with his skin looking the way it does ivermectin may be better. Will there be a reaction with the amoxicillin?
Thoughts?
Thanks again for the input Eggcessive.

Ivermectin pour on dosage is 0.1 ml for every 2 pounds. It is not used as a dip, but applied directly to the skin on the back of the neck down the backbone area. You can use the permethrin instead, or spray his cage or pen. I would hold off then on the Tylan. By any chance did you have any fowl pox last year? Mosquitoes are not out yet where you live, but there is just something about his appearance that reminds me of fowl pox. Pox is spread by mosquitoes, but the shed scabs can become powdery and can remain infectious to chickens not affected yet. Just wish we had some ability to tell you what is going on, because I am really not sure.

I looked up fowl pox yesterday & didn’t seem like he had the majority of those symptoms. But mosquitoes are certainly out. We’ve had a ton of rain & temps have been warm enough now. Plus we live next to a small river.
He does have some scans that have peeled off & the skin underneath looks healthy. Other than the wood ash & DE, they aren’t powdery.
No, we’ve never had disease of any kind. I’ve had my flock for years, since I hatched them or bought as chicks. I’ve never seen or heard of anything like this! I’m so confused & worried!
