Yah, I head from a bird rescue that the whole thing about human scent on babies, is only for Blue Jays, they will not take the baby back. I agree with putting it back in the nest, and leaving it alone. Mommy and Daddy bird will give this baby the best chance.

i can't THEN IT'LL DIE!

How in the world do you know it will die if you put it back........you didn't know to not leave it alone in the first place.

Oh boy:/.Maybe the parents will take it back hopefully.Wild baby birds require almost constant feeding.I tried to salvage some robin's once from my mom's porch that my brothers cat got the parent bird.I didn't know anything about them then and thought well would try anyway.Sadly they all died withing 2 days of warmth and giving them meals worms and bird formula 4 times a day.About the only time wild birds are salvagable are weeks into growth and feathered and almost ready to leave nest anyway.Owls, hawk's etc. require live food if they are injured or rescued and should be turned over to wildlife mgmt. It's a constant job and most people even with best intentions do not have the time or resourc s to properly care for them.WE did treat a down baby rabbit with a wobble in its tummy once.Got the wobble out put splint type bandaid on and antibiotic and fed for 3 ays and it just hopped right off.Depends on the type of animal I suppose.

Yes, you need to claim responsibility. You just don't mess with animals nests. If you have reason to believe a mother has been killed and left behind a litter/flock etc....consult a wildlife rehabilitator for advice.

I thought this post was a joke at first. Why iin the world did you just sit around waiting on the birds to leave the nest only to steal the eggs and break them open?? We humans are ill equipped to care for any baby birds much less a newly hatched dove. They are extremely hard to feed- they live on crop milk not bugs and seeds like most birds. I'm sad to think that a creature had to die for you to learn your lesson. Remember this..."If it aint broke, don't try to fix it." Birds know what they are doing even if they leave their nest for awhile and remember if you are lurking around where the nest is, you may be spooking them away. Let the wild animals be. I'm glad you cared enough to post about saving it and then burying it. Next time just watch with binoculars if you truly love nature.
