I have a couple of Bronze (not broad breasted) and my Tom started doing something very strange yesterday. I went out in the morning and let my girls and Turkeys out for the morning as usual. Everyone seemed fine, in fact the Turkeys every morning run around flapping and hopping for a few minutes. I went back in the house thinking everything was fine. Just a few minutes later I went back out to feed them their breakfast and found my young Tom just standing stiff legged and hunched in the back a bit and standing perfectly still. I approached him and he slowly went down, jamming his tail feathers into the grass. There he sat motionless. I began touching him to see if he would take a nip at me like usual but he just opened his mouth in a gape, not even panting, then his third eye lid rolled over and stayed shut for several seconds. Thinking to myself, dear God he's having a seizure! I ran back into the house to grab some syringes and electrolytes, ran back out to the Tom to find him over with the Hen's eating and acting just fine. ??????
Later in the day I went out to clean up some of my son's garbage off the deck. I "fluffed" a garbage sack, my Tom did it again! Froze in position and had all the symptoms from earlier in the morning. After several minutes he comes around.
This morning same story. This time he did it in front of my Husband.

It has been hot (80's), but my property has lots of shade, access to constant cool water and places to dust. He was hatched in early Feb. He's also pushing 25-30lbs. Is this because of a heart condition? Or has he suffered a neurological catastrophe?

Any thoughts on what is going on, or what I should do for him. I know that Bronze have a fast growth rate and are meant for food, but am hoping he's not going to be a statistic. We love him dearly!

Possibly a sign of sexual frustration if the hens aren't co-operating. Our newly elected young king of the flock has been doing this and I saw him yesterday fertilising one of my wife's gardening crocs. The remainder of the flock quickly moved away from the spectacle on each occasion. I wait to see what a turkey/croc cross looks like.

I don't think this is a sexual frustration thing. It's like he is having a seizure or something. When you try to move him he stays frozen, his muscles are all tight, and when you pull out a wing it shakes. I don't have pic's of him having an episode yet.

Hummm.. I wonder if it could be botulism? I had a chicken one time that all of a sudden went stiff, head hung down, couldn't walk, head wiggled like a snake...then just stood there like his head was a brick. I put it under a heat lamp(it was cold out) fed him vitamins and wet mushy food, scrambled eggs and he recovered in a few days......

That sounds scary! But unfortunately it could be a possibility? How do they get it? Is Botulism found in the environment? I thought it was from eating canned or jarred food that's gone bad. I keep a clean coop and water gets changed twice a day. They do have access to my pond and creek though.

My turkeys would give their right spur for temps in the 80's!!!! It has been 99-101 with heat indexes at 110 everyday for weeks here and 91deg at 10:30 last night so I don't think it is the heat. Epilepsy maybe? It seems to have been triggered with an action. Botulism lives in the soil.

I gave him pedialyte and limited some of his food intake today, and we have not had an episode since this morning. I also put out a kiddy pool with about an inch of water. We are expecting mid to upper 90's the next few days. I live in western Washington, so it's always a bit humid. How do you keep them from getting heat stroke in temps over 110??? I freeze bottles of water and place them in the coop and where my girls all like to dust, but they only last a few hours. I put out a sprinkler, but they run from it and avoid the areas I wet down. My Husband is beginning to worry about my state of mind!

If it's Botulism wouldn't my other birds be showing signs? I will take a fecal sample into my vet to rule this out...I hope. Botulism is a scary word!
