I say pullet.... I have a couple of black sex link pullets that look more like cockerels than anything. But they're sex links... so... pullets... right?

Sex links are unique in that specific characteristics are linked to their sex....understanading the way genetics work allow for manipulating the results. In the case of red sex links, it's a matter of knowing putting a gold based cock over a silver based hens the resulting chicks get characteristics from the opposite sex parent. Pullets hatch red and feather in red with varying amounts of white; cockerel a hatch yellow and feather in white with small patches of red on the wingbows and some gold/cream tones in the saddle & hackle.Looks like four pullets and one cockerel to me, but I know absolutely nothing about sex-links. That's a seriously large pink comb and wattles on that... girl?
Thanks kindly for the explanation; We don't have the option of buying sex linked birds at the store, and the folks that work there are rather knowledgeable about medicines for chickens but when asked what breed is this chicken, or that chicken... they're totally clueless. When you go in and say you'd like to buy chicks, they only want to know if you want them for meat or eggs. Period. You get little yellow balls of fluff (that turn into production reds) if you say eggs. You get either black chicks with a white spot on their heads, or cream colored balls of fluff if you say you want them for meat. You can again ask them for the name of the breed, and with a shrug of their shoulders they take your cash... they just don't know. I wish those little white meat birds were egg birds instead; I totally LOVE their personality.Sex links are unique in that specific characteristics are linked to their sex....understanding the way genetics work allow for manipulating the results.
