Hello, my name is Michelle and I have been a member here for a while, but for some reason, I can't get in to my "old" account here (also AnimalQuackers).

I am a member in a facebook group of chicken lovers, and recently, a man posted that he had found a rooster he believes to have been used in cockfighting on the side of the road, left for dead, abandoned. He picked up the roo and took him home and has been nursing him back to health. The roo has improved dramatically!

The man, named Dean, lives on Oahu, and is NOT allowed to keep roosters in his neighborhood, and has neighbors who adamantly enforce this rule. He is keeping "Mack" at his work, in a dog crate, but obviously, that can not go on for long. Dean has indicated that his co-workers have lost patience with Mack, and he HAS TO GO!

I will get more info on Mack from Dean, but what I do know is that he doesn't appear to be "sick" so much as just suffering from the effects of being abused. He hasn't acted aggressive, and let Dean clip his horribly overgrown nails and spurs. He is fully feathered, except for his head. No obvious signs of illness, although he has a deformity of his foot.

It's a pretty urgent situation, in that Mack has to find a safe place to stay RIGHT AWAY! Is there anyone in Hawaii that could take him, even temporarily?

Pictures attached - sorry for the quality! They are screenshots of a video Dean posted.

I hope you find him a good home!

I'm in WV and would adopt him, if you could find a way to get him here. I've adopted other chickens that came from horrible previous conditions. (The previous long term owners were kind enough to say they could no longer care for the chickens and to get rid of them.)

Bless you for helping.

Bless Dean for helping the rooster.

Hi everyone, thank you for the replies!

I am not sure about Craigslist - I don't know how Dean feels about it (I will ask him) - but I worry that there might be people there who will use the roosters for fighting - and that is ABSOLUTELY something he (and I!) want to avoid!

There are several people who are members of the facebook page who have offered to take him, but it would mean shipping Mack to the mainland, and Dean isn't crazy about that idea, and all the paperwork involved in it.

Alley - what town are you in?

GOOD NEWS! Dean wrote that he has found someone in Hawaii who wants to give Mack his forever home! YEA!

Many thanks to all of you who replied with your kind comments and suggestions. I can tell you that Dean also saw two other roosters nearby in the field - one he was able to capture and he died shortly after. The other, as far as I know - is still out there, so I may be back asking for help!

Thank you all again!

Michelle

I know that there are a LOT of feral chickens in the islands. My brother lives on the Big Island and has them in his yard all the time, not his chickens, he doesn't do chickens. So he may have been abused, or he may just be feral and got hurt fighting. It's hard to tell in the pictures you posted, but his spurs may have been blunted, which would indicate he may have belonged to someone at some point, but no way to know for sure. Good to know he will have a good home now.

Yeah! I am so glad there is a happy ending and possible MORE happy endings with Dean helping the homeless chickens!

Thank you Dean for helping the chickens!!!
