Help. Very confused about sand. Need quick clarification

I posted almost the exact same thing after I read so much conflicting advice. I still couldn't get a good answer so I used half construction and half play sand.

And the PP is not dissing anyone who lives in California, only the fact that in California just about EVERYTHING has a health warning on it. I even read that kitchen towels have a 'may cause cancer' warning. I used to live there and my parents still do, and my dad said pretty much everything he buys has some kind of health warning on it.

They have a thing where my hubby works because some of the materials that parts arrive in say something about "has been known to cause cancer in California..." or something to the effect and they look at each other and say "good thing we don't live in California or we'd be in trouble"!

But the one poster is correct silica is found in nearly all earth eliments, sand is silica, play sand is a man made product that has carbonates added to it to "neutralize" the silica >quartz< making "free silica" into "non-free silica". Even "safesand" >a brand name< contains silica since silica is a part of sand. If a manufacturer claims to be 100% silica free, they are lying. Long term, confined exposure to sand may cause "cancer" . Bottom line is this, silica is here to stay regardless...go to the beach...silica, dig in the dirt....silica, go for a nature walk...silica. As long as you are not exposed to it, confined for years and years and years, YOU as a human have >1% chance of being a victim of silica induced "cancer". The finer the sand granuals, the more likely to have airborne particles of silica. The sand I use is river sand, yes it most likely contains a ton of silica, since silica is quartz, but it's not fine and I don't plan on living in the pen and coop for the next 30 or 40 years. I would worry more about smog and emissions making them sick than sand.

So my suggestion is to go with river sand and not line the pockets of these companies who have joined the forces of getting rich off of the inflicted fears of the public!

saw spelling errors...wow need to not post early in the am!
