hi!

I have a one week old chick that has a leathery bottom side. I am so worried! What's going on with it? She is a little bit lethargic. There is runny diarrhea like poop on the brooder floor but I can't say if it's from her - there are 6 other chicks in there. Yesterday I let them play in the run with older 5 week old chicks for a few hours. so they were outdoors (temp in the 80s) and with older chicks who didn't seem to mind them - I didn't witness any territorial Behavior.

Give her some electrolytes and vitamins in her water, and dip her beak often until she is more alert. Pedialyte or Gatorade will do until you get some. She may just have an umbilicus (belly button) that is slow to heal. Watch the area for leakage or getting swollen or mushy--that can be mushy chick disease, a bacterial disease from hatch, and those chicks will not survive. Here is some info about omphalitis:

Sadly 2 of my chicks died today. I think it's coccaidis, but I can't be sure. One was the sick one that I wrote about and the other I didn't see any symptoms. I found the little pullet breathing her last and tried to give her sugar water but she didn't make it :(
