That looks a lot like what happened to my girl (even the birds look the same!) She got attacked by a dog. I used Magic Powder & BluKote on it. The magic powder has got charcoal and other antiseptic chemicals in it. It dries up the blood & helps to slowly heal. The blukote is also antiseptic, but I only used it on her a couple of times because it seemed to hurt her more. I gave her yogurt & some canned dog food mixed with corn. She loved both of them! I added teramyacin to her water, but she wasn't drinking much, so I started mixing medicated chick starter in with her regular crumbles. After about 3 weeks of keeping her locked up in the house, she was ready to go back outside. She actually laid her first egg about a month after the attack! Her feathers started growing back after 3-4 weeks. I hope your pretty girl recovers. Like was mentioned above - the fact that she's alert, eating, & pooping is a very good sign. I would suggest using the blukote on the wound when you do reintroduce her to the flock. I used it a few days in a row more to keep the other birds from pecking at her than for her benefit. It stains purple & smells rather strong, so one sniff & the other girls totally ignored the wound, even though it was healed.

well the girls were coming out this morning from the coop and i had noticed that the other black chickie i have looked like she was missing feathers so i picked her up and checked and she has a scab on her back end in the same place that Big Mama had her gapping wound. I decided to check some of the others on t heir way in and a few others have either bald spots or scabs like something has been pecking at them. Of course it is nothing like Big Mama's wound but what could be going on. I looked in the coop and i dont see anything that is obviously sticking out to us. Could it be one of the other chickens, maybe bordem? I did just put tree chippings in the run a few months ago , maybe when they are dusting they are getting caught with a twig or something? I cant have a house full of chickens,lol!!!!!!!!!!! I am running out of room. I am leaving the others out there cause no one is bothering with it, what is there is scabbed up, but i will be checking them out every day to keep an eye on it. I am thinking of trying Bluekote (sp?) on the others so no one bothers it though.

Have you noticed any rodents or critters that might be gnawing on them? It really does look like something's trying to eat them, based upon Big Mama's wounds, and if they all look like that...... I know a few people have commented on rats doing damage like that. You might want to invest in some bait blocks with access only for rats & mice so your birds can't eat. I can't imagine that a random stick would do that to everybody. Maybe a stray cat, racoon, small dog, I don't know, but I'd look at what can access your birds at night while they sleep. I know every time critters have gone after my birds, they always go after the back end first. I hope you can solve the mystery before you have a flock of house chickens

I'm glad she is doing well, that first photo looked bad. As for rats, it could be. And is even likely. But I would never use poison baits. A few reasons. One, I have seen rats die from poison bait, and it is painful. Even though you want the rats gone and they are a pest, I believe in doing it as humanely as possible. More importantly, if one of your birds (or an other animal like a cat or dog) eats a rat that has ingested the poison bait it will kill them too. I suggest getting snap traps, they make types that the chickens can not get to. The rat would have to walk into box, in the box is the trap. Line the traps against the walls. Rats will always follow the walls and other solid objects, they do not willingly cross open ground.

Mice are of course a big possibility because i have lots of open space around me. UGH the thought of rats, yikes. Where would one get snap traps from that are chicken safe? I dont like the idea of the poison either.

Ok, you think she could have gotten

caught on wire or somthing? Looks to be a clean-ish like cut so I wouldn't

think so, but hey, anything can happen. Looks like you've got lots of people helping you out,

And I myself have never dealt with rats so I'll just stop here

rats, yuck! I had them last spring. I did a combination. First I found runs that had been dug under my coop edge. I put poison in them. Doesn't seem to work. I blocked the coop at night and left food in a covered area with Large rat traps baited with a peanut butter and chicken feed bait. I caught 3 in two days and they disappeared. Also there is now a stray cat who patrols the area. I have not seen any rats, mice etc. If you get a cat make sure it is a female as they are much better hunters. Have her neutered and give her a rabies and Leukemia shot and you are set. good luck with your problem. Gloria Jean
