HELP what happened to her Bum (WARNING GRAPHIC PIC)

Wow! I just checked into this thread and followed it all the way thru. All the posters are amazing people! Glad to hear we have KickinChickin (sp?) and all that knowledge from experience!!

This is a beautiful bird, love her colors! She looks just a bit distressed now that she is on the mend and cooped in a smaller area than she is used to. I'm sure she is feeling much better though. I have to agree to watch that black stuff. Follow the advice given is my vote. I'd have done the same if I'd found one of my only 5 girls in that condition.

I do think it was another animal that inflicted the original injury. Don't know why I think this.

Love all the pix, even though the first ones

were really hard to view for a tender heart such as mine!

Good morning, ya'll stay up too late for me so I missed all the excitement last night. LOl wow does Big Mama look good. She doesn't look the east bit stressed. And her coloring is great. That picture of your little one looking into the crate is precious. Keep up the good work and I am sure she's going to heal nicely. Thanks for all the great pictures

Last summer one of my Rhode Island Reds got a wound in that exact same place and it looked exactly like that. She had a problem with poopy butt, and by the time I discovered something was wrong, flies had gotten to her and it was full of maggots.

Not to get too graphic, but the poopy feathers covered the wound. You would have had to pick her up to check, not an easy task as my hens are not used to being handled. I bathed her and got as many maggots off as possible and dusted her and kept her inside, but more kept appearing from deep in the wound, and she died a day later.

Be glad it's not fly season! This shows you how a small wound can become a big one in a very short time, what with flies or other hens---"friends"? helping.

So glad your hen is doing well. She looks good.

Wow! Big Momma is simply gorgeous. I LOVE that black beak! My GLC has a black beak as well as my BC.
I have a 3 year old and she just loves her baby chickens. Even the adult are baby chickens to her. Her favorite is the Sultan, she has no peripheral vision so she is super easy to catch....and torment. I spent half the summer rescuing this poor pullet!
