Well i took her out yesterday to look at the wound, and it was all scabbed over, but the scab was pulling away and i looked and it looked like it might have had some puss in some spots so i took the scab off. It did not seem to bother her at all. After taking off the scab i put some of the neosporine on it, and today or tomorrow i might treat it with iodine water again just to make sure it is healing ok. She is comfy in my house and i am afraid she isnt going to leave us,lol. I am having a problem with her knocking over her water it is impossible for me to keep water in her cage.

A couple of years ago I had an elderly cat with diabetes. Because of his disease, sometimes he couldn't get to the litter pan in time and we had urine accidents. When I wasn't home to supervise him, I put him in a "show" cage (52x22x22) with a litter pan in one end. He was obsessed with water, too, (part of his illness) and would spill water in the cage and make a terrible mess. I went to the pet shop and bought him a water dish that screwed on to the wires in the cage. The cupholder had a flat part on one side of the wire that was permanent and then you put another piece on the other side and fastened it down with a butterfly nut (I think they are called). A stainless dish (maybe 3 or 4 cups in size) dropped into a circular holder. I was able to put it high enough that he couldn't sleep with his head in the dish or spill it. We used it for almost a year before he died, and it worked wonderfully.

You can have rats and not know it. Where there are chickens, there are rats. I had 3 meat birds along with my laying hens, and one of the meat birds developed a small sore on his rump. Not sure what happened but reguardless the other chickens went to town on him and had an opening just like yours. So I cleaned him up and put him in a dog crate in the coop so he wouldn't loose his place with the others. He healed up fine but the same thing happened to my other meat boy. So same with him. I ended up making a seperate area for them until the canibalism stopped. They are all back together now and doing fine. As far as using poison for the rats, I would advise against it. We did our first year with chickens and the rat poop contained the poison which the chickens ate and ended up dying. I would just use traps or get a large bucket filled with water. Well it sounds like you have it worked out. And that post from Sharol sounds good for the water bowl. Just be thankful your hen is not a duck talk about messy. LOL. Anyway glad to hear she is still on the mend, and that she's safe from the rest of the flock.

She is a very beautiful chicken and i hope she gets better....
the one thing i haven't seen suggested as to her problem is " blow out"
was she laying eggs at the time of this injury?
how old is she?

i had a Silkie hen "Scotty" she was about 3 years old and she had an injury similar to what yours does.
at first i thought she mite have jumped on something and punctured herself ( there were actually maggots in the wound)

so i brought her in and cleaned her up, applied antibioitics and she seemed to be healing great.. then a few days later it happened again...
only worse with MORE maggots..... i learned from a very knowledgable chicken lady what was happeing...
as chickens get older their inside lining can weaken and eggs can pop out of places where they are not supposed to.
the humane thing to do was to end her life as even though she seemed to not be in pain.... her suffering was not going to end and with each egg she passed ...

omgosh Silkie Sue how horrible. I dont know when it happened, but my other girls have scabs where she had her open wound so I think it is something going on in the coop, with the coop itself or rats. She is not even a year old, so still young. I have never heard of a blow out before hopefully i will never have to deal with that, seems crazy.

Sharol thank you for that i will have to look at getting one of those.

Ok so this is the best i could get this morning, it is hard to hold her still, expose her boo boo, and take the pic at the same time,lol. Overall it looks good, I havent kept putting the neosporine on her cause i want to let the air get to it and i dont want to keep making moist, plus it looks like it is doing well.
