I reintroduced my injured hen before the feathers grew back. Just coat the area with BluKote & they left it alone. Although I didn't reintroduce at night, & she got attacked by the other girls on her head.

She had been top chick, but the absence made her lose that place. I don't know if reintroduction at night would've prevented that. However, like you, we're in the cold snowy area of the country, so I didn't want to leave her out at night before she'd been acclimatized, so I let her out to free-range during the day & brought her back in at night when it got cold. She's now been with the other girls about 1 1/2 weeks, and has been accepted back, just lower on the ladder.

You're girl looks much better! I do hope you can figure out what's doing the damage. You probably want to make sure it is fully scabbed before releasing her because she will give herself a dustbath in the first day or two, and you don't want her getting that dirt into the wound.

It's already determined it's not a prolapse. TIQ posted earlier pics showing an intact uninvolved vent. The wound is below the vent. We're on to figuring out what caused it now.

If it is rats. You have to secure all the food into tight strong containers, as rats can get nearly anywhere. Use the big snap traps. No poison, please. Countless issues of wildlife and domestic life dying as a result. I place mine inside wire enclosures, so the hens and dogs can't access them. The rats don't care if they're behind some wire. Try different baits (cheese, peanut butter, bacon, raisins), then use whatever works. Find their den and make it inhospitable.

Important: remove food, remove shelter, reduce population. Works for all animals.

Healing nicely. I would check everyone of your hens. If you find one that does not have a bald spot or scab then she is probably the culprit and the one doing the pecking and will not stop. I give mine alfalfa hay once a day + BOSS and occasional treats plus the normal ration, oyster shell and water. Helps with the bordom

If you do have one hen that is doing all the damage that one should be culled. Good Luck!

well i took her out yesterday and looked at the wound and it is completely scabbed over and almost gone, still missing feathers, so this week at some point i am going to start taking her out either to the coop, but have her in a cage, to spend some time out there in the cold or put her in a cage in the garage a little at a time until i put her in there full time. I have to say i was very suprised to see it almost healed completley already

Just wanted to stop by and let everyone know that Big Mama is still doing well. Her bottom is still bare but there are feathers coming in. Other of my girls have bare bottoms too, we are trying to keep the rats out, if in fact that is what it was, and so far so good i guess. It has been very SNOWY here lol so i do worry about bare bottoms in this weather but they seem to be doing ok
