I have had chickens for six years, but I haven’t still not been able to figure out what this is and what causes it. if anybody knows, please help. She seems fine other than the dirty feathers on her butt.

Does she have missing feathers and red skin around her vent? Is there a bad odor, or a dripping vent? Her vent area is soiled from loose poops, which could be diet related, vent gleet, or from drinking too much water. What do you feed her? I would soak her bottom in warm soapy water, and take a lot at the skin. Dry her with a towel or hairdryer. If her skin is irritated, you can use miconazole or yeast cream around the vent daily. Using probiotics or plain Greek yogurt with live cultures may help as well.

Thank you so much! It doesn’t appear to be irritated and no drippy vent at the moment I’ve had chickens that had this problem before, but I was not able to figure out what caused it. I soaked a previous one in Epsom salt water before.

I feed her at 16% layer pellets.

Is she the only one like this? I would check her crop to see if it is empty in the morning before she eats or drinks. Chickens with sour crop or pendulous crops may have a fungal infection. Some may drink a ton of water if they are having a crop impaction. Drinking more than usual can lead to loose or watery poops. You could try feeding her a little cooked rice with a little buttermilk or plain Greek yogurt to see if it helps firm up her poops.

There is 2, but she is worse. Thank you for the advice!
