My chick that just hatched this morning has something hanging out of it's umbilical cord area. I am including a pic but it's very blurry. He didnt have this when he hatched but as he walked around it got worse until some egg white looking stuff came out and now it's this red looking stuff. Anyone know what I should do? He is not weak. He is more active than the other 3. He seems fine except this thing hanging out which he drags on the wire as he tries to walk around. This is my first ever chick so I have no idea what it is or what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am not of much help..but it could be the umbilicus, but I would take it off the wire and onto something that won't snag and tear it. My chick had something similar hanging off and I was afraid to pull it off. It came off about 24 hours later and was not any sort of problem. good luck!

its the yolk sack. It did not absorb before the baby hatched. It must have came out of the shell to soon. Unfortunatey, they usually dont make it, but if you keep it moist and quiet it may absorb, but I havent had any luck with the 2 I had hatch like that in my years of hatching.

Hi! Looks like unabsorbed yolk. If you can out it back in the incubator where it is dark and quiet, it should be OK. If you have a small bandaid you can put 'over' the area (to keep it from dragging and to keep other chicks from picking at it), that might help.
Good luck!

yes the youl is unabsorbed. unfortunately I dont' think the little guy will make it. I have never had one make it either. do put it back in the incubator maybe in a small plastic bowl to separate from others and keep off the wire.

ooowwww poor guy....
keep us updated.. i'm about to have my first hatch next week so i'd appreciate knowing what you did and how the little guy handled it....

Well I had put him back in the bator and had moved the other three under a heat lamp so they wouldnt bother him. It had started to dry up so I left it alone.. then I put a towel in the bator for him to lay on so it wasnt dragging on the wire. BIG MISTAKE... it stuck to the towel and he wound up dragging some of his intestines out through the hole. He still acts o.k. but I'm sure he cant live like this. My husband will probably have to cull him. I'm so sad, hes so cute and he's my only EE that hatched. If anyone knows of any way of saving him, I would appreciate it.

It wont hurt to slime it up with antibiotic and try to get everything back inside. Then bandaid it closed or superglue the skin shut. Might as well try before culling.

Oh my, that is not good. If too much pulls out there is no saving it. From the picture, if that is all that is out *perhaps* it might absorb back in. It's a long shot, but try some preparation H to help shrink it. If anymore comes out, it's probably best to cull. But you may want to give it some time to go in.

i'm so sorry. i've been through this and it's very stressful.
