HELP! What is wrong? Droopy wing, beak down, Pictures..

I have three grape vines, and when the grapes start to ripen, I have hopping chickens who strip the vine of grapes from the bottom 4 feet. I've never had any chicken act like they had botulism. I think the chickens and wild birds seem to eat all accessible grapes long before they would be fermenting. Granted, this is desert here and grapes dry rather than rot, for the most part. I'm glad this thread was here, because we'll all remember that the next time we see a chicken looking like that in our own yard.

Could it have been that she ate some grapes that where fermented and was drunk or really hung over... Just asking cause when I have a glas of wine.. I look like that the next morning

I'm sorry I never got back with you to offer any help. It's not that I didn't want to, it just looked like you were getting the advice you needed and things were looking up.

Glad she's doing better!

I hadn't realized I was holding my breath until I got to the update. I'm so glad she's feeling better! I was about to suffocate myself!

I can squeeze back those tears that were threatening to cut loose and slide down my cheeks, or let them go in relief that your pretty girl is doing better. I hope she makes a full and complete recovery.

wow...as I read this I thought she was a goner~ Amazing tale and thank you BYC community~ They helped me through a sick chicken before too!

I just found this thread and think my hen has botulism. She started a few days ago with fumbling around then yesterday she couldn't walk.. then today she's locked up in a crate and her neck is paralyzed. I hand feed her and she will take the food and swallow it herself but cannot eat or drink. I've been feeding her a yoguart/egg/oatmeal soup per doctor's orders (3 horses)

and supplementing her water with vitamins.

I just did the epsom salts flush but only gave her half of the entire ounce... seems like a lot to give her the entire thing... maybe wait an hour then hit it again?

I was really close to culling the bird til I found this thread. I hope she'll be another success story in a few days.

Here's a couple pics. Her legs are laid out behind her and her poor little peep is keeping an eye out

I just culled two chickens yesterday, but after reading this thread, I think they may have had botulism. We have a compost pile nearby where they free range and one chicken disappeared last week and we finally found it by the smell. It had wedged itself under the coop between two of the cement blocks that hold it up

The run is attached to the long side of the coop and where she had wedged herself was up against the fence to the run under the ramp for the chickens to get into the coop. had to remove the ramp and cut the fence to get her out. Wish I had read this thread first......I think we have another with it so we will try your recommendations on her.

akabull, I'm so sorry to hear about your chicken.

Please do pass the word that compost piles are a great idea - but not for chickens. I think Speckledhen lost one in one, and I never knew until I lost a duck to botulism from just decaying leaves and mud. It was an awful experience, one I'd rather no one else experience.

Again, my condolences and thank you for sharing that experience with us; hopefully it'll save lives.
