Help. What is wrong with my chicks?

You are getting so much advice...someone just clarified we all do things differently and that's why. You will figure out what works for you. Whatever happened with your chicks this time was not because of something you didn't know or didn't do. It just happened. I would take back the rented brooder, and I think you already decided to do that. I love the new brooder you're setting up. Just to give you one more thing to think about, I did find a dog heating pad for about $38 on Amazon and made a MHP out of that. I haven't used it yet, but it was inexpensive and easy. I will try it o my next chicks. I ordered it the same time as the Sweeter Heater when I was having issues, and the Sweeter Heater worked so well that I stuck with that.

Do we have you thoroughly confused now???

BTW, my spoiled 2 month old chicks still have this in their coop and still use it. I have only 4 chicks, but this one would accommodate 20 chicks up to 6 weeks easily, IMHO. You don't need it longer than that. So the smaller size would work for you I think.

There will be 9 chicks. Thanks for the link. That’s super informative. I don’t know why I’m still scared of doing it wrong or the heat pad turning off. I think I’m just still traumatized from losing so many chicks.

Yes I totally am too. I’m going to go get a measuring tape and try to wrap my mind around it. I’m just so new to chickens that then trying to picture 9 chickens under it is where I get tripped up. They would probably only need it for a month or so...I’m just trying to visualize how big they’d be and if they’d fit.

You have to remember they will only be using it for a couple few weeks, they're not gonna need it as big chicks.

Where's the heat?

I rigged up a ceramic emitter in my lamp. It’s on the right side of the picture but I’ve since resituated it a little better and they seem to have figured it out! I also turned the room up to 75.

I just noticed the little hand in the picture pointing to the chicks! That's cute, the toddler seems excited for the chicks' new home too!
