HELP! What's wrong with our chick? Open wound under her wing...

So here's another question: does that Blue Kote stuff ever come off the chick? I got some on my hands and it looks like it'll be there until those layers of skin shed!

The reason I ask is that yesterday a friend of mine who works in bird rescue came over. He looked at the leghorn and he told me (in the nicest possible way) that it was probably a mistake to put the plantain poultice and blue kote on because both of those things attract attention from the other chicks. They are genetically programmed to equate a dark green color with food, and nutritious food at that. What's more, they probably like the taste of plantain. He thought this was encouraging the other chicks to peck at the leghorn. The same goes for the blue kote. Even though it's supposed to stop them from pecking, he said it might actually be attracting attention because of the color.

Also, after watching the leghorn he said that she wasn't pecking herself so much as she was preening. He thought she was trying to get all of the stuff we put on her (plantain poultice, Neosporin, blue kote) off of her feathers and down. He advised us to keep her isolated and just leave her alone for a while, i.e. don't put anything on her at all. It looks like the original wound has healed and now her issue is just behavioral.

He gave us some good suggestions for how to reintroduce her to the flock, but I'm worried the blue kote is going to single her out for more negative attention. Is there any way to get it off?

No, I don't think it does unless it wears off. And I'm not a big fan of blue-cote for the same reason, to be honest. Anything very different will cause chickens to peck.

It's good to hear about the preening at least. And I'm glad her wound is healed - so that's good. Since her bluecote is mostly under her wing, I wouldn't worry as long as the wound is healed. Just do it on a weekend or something so you'll be able to check on her several times during the day.
