Thanks again to all who responded with encouragement, support, and some really great tips and ideas. I have an old Toyota pickup with an open bed, but I've run down several pet crates to have on hand should I need to evacuate and take all fifteen chickens and my eighteen-year old cat with me. And I have a destination lined up where I and the animals will be welcome.
You kind folks here have helped me solve some very tedious logistics problems, and I feel confident, as one is able under the circumstances, to meet this challenge with a workable evacuation plan.
As of this posting, our fire is still raging out of control to the east of my location, and the fires to the south of me are approaching containment. The danger from this fire appears to have passed. However, due to the severe drought conditions, this looks to be a long summer of high fire danger. Up until this past Sunday when the fire began (thought to have been started from a spark on the railroad track from the Amtrack train) we were experiencing choking smoke from the Arizona/New Mexico fires. Now Colorado is burning. How long before the entire west goes up?
But, thanks to all of you, I'm better prepared now to face the dangers and challenges ahead. This forum is a terrific resource, and I'm so thankful I have it.
