help with 2 babys i just received in mail ..

I have the 2 in the box they came in with a 60 watt bulb a few inches away ..they are drinking a little each time we dip their beaks ..they are starting to respond now ..crossed fingers and a cracked heart I have ..boy they really stuff a lot in a box ..wow..i found these 2 under everyone else ..

Sounds like you are all trying your best so keep dipping the beaks in water till they are ready to drink
on their own ....

Once them checks are ready to eat or able to eat try boiling up a couple of egg's then peal the shell
and mash up the egg real good then serve as the egg has everything they need at this age .....

Keep us updated .....

cackle hatchery..the rest are in great shape ..I lost the one ..and the other is in under a lite ..I have a bottle cap with some food soften with sugar water ..shes not eating yet..i am kind of thinking I am making her drink even when she doesn't want to ..how often should I be offering the water ..I mean its in the box with her but shes not up and moving a whole lot yet ..I have to pick her up each time and dip her beak and you can see her drinking ..but sometimes its like she doesn't want it .

I ordered 31 birds and even with the 2 that were sick I still ended up with 40 birds ..I think ..the others move so fast its hard to count them ..I lose count after 36..lol

I think that's the right thing to do is dipping their beaks. I sometimes use a tsp to dip. I've also had good luck with chick feed mush , taking them out and just making them stand in front of it for a minute. Both of mine started eating that way.

the 2nd one died as well ..my granddaughter was here ..I had to tell her I put her back in the brooder with the others and that she was all better now ..I buried them both in our pet cem out back ..I think I went about 2 feet deep ..I hope nothing digs them up ..

thanks to everyone ..I really wanted to see them get better ..I guess it just wasn't ment to be ..I feel terrible about it ..you guys are great and I am glad I joined you all on this site ..I will learn from this and make sure I am ready incase this happens again ..

Really sorry to hear about your loss. Shipping can be rough on the ones that hatch out a bit weaker than the others. Sometimes, when the group huddles for warmth during shipping, one or two might get "squished" too much by the others, or they might wander to the far side of the box (even though they are tiny compartments) and chill too much. There are just so many variables!

Also, welcome to BYC, belatedly! I am about 45 minutes east of you, and I have family in Lakewood.

thanks ..I did notice the ones leg was a strange red color ,while the other leg looked normal ..not sure there was much moving around in the box ..they packed a lot in it ..I ordered 31 birds and got 40..i am not complaining but I would rather of had the right amount and none dead or dieing ones . I also no theres no way to control it .I no the stress can be real hard on them ..I started reading a thread on here about travel stress ..not sure I'd make it in a box at a day old and shipped acrossed the country..lol.
heres a couple pics of a few babys ..they are doing pretty good ..

45 minutes away I am guessing Dunkirk or erie pa /..just kidding , you don't have to say were you are ./.
thanks for the welcome ..

I'm glad they're doing good. My last order was for 25 and they were crammed in a box with no heat pack, and I lost 2, one dead and one almost dead, then dead.

East of you, in the boonies of Cattaraugus county. :)
I know not everyone can or want to take birds to the vet, but if you ever do need a good avian vet, Dr. Wade up in Buffalo is excellent. Not that I am suggesting you take your chicks! Just in case you get a sick chicken someday and need some veterinary help.
