Hey all

I have a broody hen sitting on two eggs. Last night, one of the eggs was out of the nest and cracked slightly. I tried candling, but things are too far along to see much or anything (I'm not sure on exact dates of things). Anyway, I put the egg back and figured if soemthing is actually wrong with it, mama will toss it out again.

This morning the egg was still under here, but now has a HUGE hole

I thought it might be dead, but as I was about to start an eggtopsy, the egg and membrane started moving like crazy, so it's still alive. I currently have it back under mom. But what can I do, if anything, for this egg?

Sorry I don’t know a thing about incubating

This exact thing happend with me today. My broody duck is on day 24 and one of her eggs looked exactly like that. I decided to leave it in with her but a few hours later when I went out to check on it, the broody had tossed it 6 feet away from the nest. It was freezing cold and saturated by the rain. It wasn’t moving at all so I decided to take it apart and see what was inside, the duckling was fully formed but it was definitely dead. Guess you’re just gonna have to toss it or see what the broody mamma does with it

So you think it'd be best to try an assisted hatch at this point?

Well it’s the only thing you can do. The egg won’t hatch by itself, you don’t know what day it is for the egg either so the only thing you can do is peel the shell open carefully and see what’s inside. That chick won’t hatch by itself as by the time hatching day comes the tissue will be dry

The blood vessels are so big still... Is there anyway to do a successful assisted hatch this early?

I’m going to be completely honest with you. There is a 10% chance that this chick will live. You can either open it up or put it back under the mother hen. Be very careful when peeling the egg, use a cloth with warm water to dampen the eggs tissue as you peel. Is the chick moving inside the egg ? If you can get it out alive then you’ll be fine. Just know that this chick will most likely be a runt and their is a small chance of survival for it.
