HELP WITH DOUGHY CROP PLEASE!!!!!

GardenChickens,

YES by all means it DID work!! It seemed to just disintegrate all that doughy stuff in her crop?? I don't know how else to explain it. However, I will say this.. a couple of days later she has a full crop again in the morning?? Well.. actually not full.. cause she did go up to roost with a very full crop as she ate like a little pig before going up to roost the night before. But she did not wake up with an EMPTY crop as she should have?? However it is NOT the doughy stuff thank God!! What I think is that her crop/digestion isn't working well due to being practically stopped all that time she had all that stuff in there?? Perhaps it's just slow now for awhile until it picks up again?? At least that's what I'm praying will happen!! This morning I tubed her again and put the mixture of spices in again since she did have alot still in her crop and I don't want it to sour or WORSE to become toxic!! I need it to pass thru as quickly as possible, so I felt this would probably be the thing to get it thru the fastest??!! I will continue to use this off and on add necessary until I get her crop working as it should, as I do have faith that it will!!

She's doing WONDERFULLY however since I gave her the spice mixture. She is eating like crazy and she's picking up weight again thank God!! She was only feathers and bones she'd lost SO much weight!! It was just awful!! She's even gone into her molt now which is INSANE i know!! But when her and my other hen started their first molt this fall, she was very very sick!! So she only lost her tail and the molt stopped!! NOW, I'm assuming that because she's doing so much better and is much stronger again, her system has decided to go ahead with the molt?? We are also in Florida and we're having basically NO winter as of yet, so I'm sure that also makes a difference. I obv wish she would NOT molt now because it takes so much out of them and here I am still trying to build the poor little thing up!! But what can I do?? I will just watch her closely and will supplement her with vitamins if necessary and just be certain she's getting plenty to eat!!

So if you're also having this same issue I'd certainly say YES by all means try the spices. I was very skeptical also, but there were no untoward effects at all with us.

Would you mind telling me more of what's going on with your hen?? How did this start?? Did your hen stop eating also?? Has she lost alot of weight?? Any other symptons?? How many do you have?? I'm sorry for all the questions, but I'm just SO curious because I've not heard of ANYONE having this problem but myself??!!! I did so much research trying to find answers but there just are none!!??? Not even the 2 vets we saw knew WHAT was wrong?? It's just the strangest thing!!

The very best of luck to you!!!!

Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply! I have 3 chickens and the one with the crop issue is called Peppa and she is ever so friendly, it would be horrible if something happened to her...anyway about a week ago I noticed that her crop wasn't empty in the morning, it was the size of a golf ball and very firm and dough like. She was actibg lethargic, stopped eating her feed and had very loose stool. I did some research and didn't find a specific answer but found that i should take her inside and not give her any solid food. I got her to throw up a little and it had a very sour smell yet it wasn't like a balloon like a sour crop usually is! the vet gave me antifungal/antibiotic and it no longer smells but after a week,in the mornigs her crop is hard like a rock and doughy. it seems like she only poops out liquid and all solids get stuck. i've been giving her oil and massaging her and gave her this spice mixture and her crop softens up but in the morning her crop isn't empty. she has lost A LOT of weight and is extremely sad and depressed from being inside all week and nothing has helped her. Now i just think i should just let ger go outside and hope for the best because i hate to see her so depressed inside and i don't see the point if nothing is helping her anyway? What do you think? the vet said we could give her water through a tube but she is drinking so much and i don't really feel comfortable doing it. my vet has no idea either and I am just pretty desperate right now... i hope your girl is all recovered now, giving her vitamins sounds like the right thing to do. Greetings to your flock from me!
thank you so much!

GardenChickens,

Hi!! First I'm sooooooo sorry you're baby Peppa is sick. I KNOW just how stressed you are!! I barely ate, slept, NOTHING for a couple weeks when my Livie was so sick!! I'd get up a million times during the night to go check on her, and afraid to open the door to the room in fear I'd possibly lost her. Oh it was just terrible!! But luckily, and thanks I give to God. that she is so much better!! She's actually got no more of that doughy stuff in her crop, her crop is emptying better everyday... it's been slow since she had all that doughy stuff in there so long!!.. she's eating like a pig now and she's active and curious again!! So I'm praying you can get your baby back again also!!

First, I didn't see anything about if she's eating again and what she's eating?? I did see you said she's drinking alot... that's the one thing Livie DID NOT do... drink??!! She just wasn't drinking or eating anything. So I need to know if she's eating cause if she's not then I'll tell you what I did to save my bird who WAS NOT eating OR drinking OK??

As for keeping her in?? My Livie also got even worse being inside she was so depressed!! I think she thought she was being punished AND tortured the poor angel!! I let her back out with Daisy and she started eating again??!! It was CRAZY!!??

I decided to start giving her that spice mixture then as nothing else had worked and I was justv out of cards!! I gave it 3X a day just like it said. By the 3rd day the dough was gone!! Then though her crop was still staying somewhat full though it was soft and kinda liquidy actually?? I just kept massaging it several times a day. It started going down a little more daily but then just kinda stayed the same again. Not alot in her crop but at least a little less than a golf ball in size. I decided to start her on some Probiotics. The next morning her crop was empty!!!! I SWEAR by the probiotics!! They really help with the digestion and crop issues!! I just used the human capsules Anna I put the powder of 1 cap in her food everyday. I am giving it to both of them actually. I will continue this daily now!! I would recommend you start her on some as well right away!!

There are just so many things I did for her and gave her that it's impossible to write it all here. I also need to know if she's eating also to know where you're at with her. As for the pooping thing... SAME thing here. No poop.. only liquid was coming out!! A GOOD REASON to give the probiotics!! Pls google this for chickens and read what all this stuff does for them!!

Now.. how many times did you give her the spices?? Did you give the full amount after you mix it?? You HAVE TO give it ALL to her which is about 12cc after its mixed. That's something that really without tubing her I don't see how you'd have gotten all that in her?? So I'm wondering how much you actually gave her and how many doses have you given??

If you could pls give me a little more info on the things I've asked I can help you better. Cause as I said... there's just too much I did over this period to write it all here. Sooooooo let's start with this OK??

Also my email is:
[email protected]

It may be easier to write me their if you like?? Also I'll give you my phone number via email if you like and this will be much easier talking!! I really want to help you so pls don't be shy. I want to help you save your baby and they will slip away so fast!! OK hope to hear from you soon.

GardenChickens,

BTW I'm sorry but forgot to tell you this. I know you mentioned giving her oil?? How much and how often are you giving her the oil??

What totally got Livie pooping again was oil!! BUT how much is the thing!!?? AND the oil should be very very warm too!! I'd take veg oil, microwave it a few seconds, test the heat level on your inner arm like you'd do a baby bottle of milk, then draw up about 2-3cc in a syringe, without the needle of course and open her beak and place the syringe at the very back of her throat, way behind the opening to her trachea at the back of her tongue, and just squirt the oil down into her crop!! Squirt it to the RIGHT SIDE of her throat... YOUR LEFT as you're facing her!! If you don't put at least that much in.. you're really not being much help!!

I'm afraid saving Livie took alot of having to tube her OR syringe the stuff into the back of the throat into the crop. It's not hard to do and you can see how to do it easily on YouTube. You'll have to get brave in case you're not doing these things if you're gonna save her. Putting little bits on her beak etc etc is just NOT going to get enough of any of these things in her I'm afraid.

I have sent you an email, thanks!

I'm very careful not to get into the airway. I go deep down into the throat with the syringe.. WAY PAST the opening to the trachea at the back of the tongue. I also always make sure that her tongue is pulled forward where I'm able to see the opening to the trachea.

If I have to give her anything more than just a couple cc's I tube her. It's much safer as far as the getting anything into the trachea when you are sure and can feel you're in the crop. Once you look, see and learn the anatomy of a chicken and their digestive and pulmonary systems, it's not difficult to do either of these things. I'm very comfortable with doing this at this point, however I'm STILL VERY CAUTIOUS!!

Thank you for the warning however!!

I tube lots, enough that I buy Kaytee Baby Bird food in 22 pound buckets. You're right, tubing is very easy and it's *much* safer than using a syringe. Problem is many people don't know avian anatomy, so having them give oil via a syringe could be dangerous.

How to give Oral Medications

You will need a helper to ensure the safety and proper medication of your bird.

1. Have your medication measures and the syringe prepared before taking any action.
2. Catch and restrain the bird.
3. Have your helper gently pry the bird’s beak open.

4. Be sure that you understand where the medication-filled syringe should be inserted.
The opening in the center at the back of the tongue is the trachea – nothing should ever go in there!

5. Gently insert the syringe alongside the tongue, and inject the medication slowly to ensure that it does not spill over into the trachea.
