HELP WITH DOUGHY CROP PLEASE!!!!!

@DarleneE , have you de-wormed your hen with Safeguard? Dose I would give is 0.23 ml per pound for 5 consecutive days. That dose will treat almost all worms.

Kathy hello,

Agreed 100% with all you said!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THOSE PICTURES AND THINGS... cause I can now email them to this lady to help her more!! Again thank you!!

As for the worms, her fecal float test did not show any of those type of worms. However I am glad you brought this up so I can get your opinion. What she does have is a type of tapeworm that the vet said they do not normally even treat because most chickens will have this type of worm and it does nothing to the chickens?? She did say if I did want to treat her for it that she would give me the medicine. Now what do you think?? Honestly that vet is about an hour drive each way and I just didn't go get the medicine. Livie is eating like a piggy again. She's curious and running about. She seems totally normal again other than that she's so thin from when she was so sick. I'm feeding her some rice, potatoes, canned soft veggies, mainly carrots. and a tiny bit of lettuce every evening in an attempt to fatten her up again. I have ALWAYS, since they were chicks, given them their treats in the evening when I bring them in from the yard!! But I'd just give them a little lettuce and shredded carrots and any fruit I might have. It's only NOW that i'm giving her this other stuff to try to put weight on her like I said. Daisy gets hers as well though I only give her mainly just lettuce and shredded carrots and maybe some fruit. She DOES NOT need to gain weight!! Heeeeheeeeeee she's HUGE!! I AM also able to separate them morning and evening so Livie can fill up on her feed in the morning mainly along with some mealworms which she loves!! I keep them apart about 2 hours morning and night!! I couldn't separate them before cause Livie wanted to just be near Daisy and wouldn't even care about eating. NOW however, since she's doing GREAT AGAIN and she has a BIG appetite, she could care less that I take Daisy out for awhile!! She is glued to the plate and usually cleans her plate!! Then she'll go over and eat some feed to finish filling her crop for the night!!

So all this being said, what do you think?? Do I need to drive all that way to get the med to treat for that tapeworm?? The vet told me they don't even treat this worm and would ONLY give me the medicine just because she's so skinny and we didn't know WHAT was wrong with her and she wasn't eating well etc etc. So that being said, I just didn't think it even necessary now that she is normal again??!!! Your opinion please??

I am also BTW thinking very hard about possibly re-homing Daisy. She's just getting too aggressive with Livie. She pecks her and runs her away from ALL food and even runs her out of the coop??!!! I have to be separating them twice a day etc AND Livie just seems to be so afraid of her now?? I even watch her chase her away even out in the run when they're still inside just pecking around. I just don't know?? I can't have my Livie terrorized though I know that!!!! I have someone I THINK could give Daisy a good SAFE home without any threat of her being killed for food or anything like that. They are this young mans pets who he loves dearly and they are well cared for. I also think he has RIR hens from the description of them?? He has 5 of them now I believe. Then I'll get Livie a new companion by getting a very gentle and docile breed like herself. I was thinking maybe a Silkie or a Frizzle?? However Shay I REALLY REALLY want now I think is a Naked Neck or A Turken!! I just LOVE those and they are the friendliest and loving chickens. They are docile, get along with most gentle breeds, are great layers and they are very very healthy and nearly exempt from most of the chicken diseases!!!! To me that sounds IDEAL!! I THINK there is a breeder of them a couple hours from us?? What are your thoughts on what I've just said??

Thank you so much!! I appreciate your knowledge and help with all this!! I've heard YOU my dear... are the CHICKEN WHISPERER!! LOL LOL

I tube lots, enough that I buy Kaytee Baby Bird food in 22 pound buckets. You're right, tubing is very easy and it's *much* safer than using a syringe. Problem is many people don't know avian anatomy, so having them give oil via a syringe could be dangerous.

How to give Oral Medications

You will need a helper to ensure the safety and proper medication of your bird.

1. Have your medication measures and the syringe prepared before taking any action.
2. Catch and restrain the bird.
3. Have your helper gently pry the bird’s beak open.

4. Be sure that you understand where the medication-filled syringe should be inserted.
The opening in the center at the back of the tongue is the trachea – nothing should ever go in there!

5. Gently insert the syringe alongside the tongue, and inject the medication slowly to ensure that it does not spill over into the trachea.

Best, clearest picture I've ever seen, Kath. Perfect. Dealing with a mystery crop issue again myself. Good grief, the fun never ends. But, perfect, just perfect. Thanks!

Glad you liked it. FWIW, all crop issues I have seen in my flock have been secondary to something further in or dehydration.

I agree that almost every crop issue is not the primary issue, only indicative of an internal problem, but in this case, it's not dehydration. This hen is guzzling water. She is very young but in her first big molt. I am about to think she has a blockage at the beginning of the proventriculus. No actual solid poop has been getting through, just liquid and green sludgy stuff. What would be blocking it can't be long grasses, not sure what she may have found out on range. I've never had any hen with grasses/hay wadded up in the crop, just mushed up food/water in a dough ball that refused to move. It's like the muscles just quit. Been working with her for a week now, trying everything to move it along. The drama never ends. Other old hens in bad molts are perfectly fine, so she got hold of something(I think). She is a seemingly perfectly healthy blue partridge Brahma, about a year and a half old.

Some slow crop problems I have seen in my own birds, birds people have brought to me, and necropsy posts here on BYC have been:
  • Cancer
  • Worms
  • Infection
  • Ascites
  • Salpingitis
  • Hardware disease.
By tubing fluids, and i mean lots of fluids, I can get all crops to clear unless the bird is already dying. I usually treat for worms and infection and hope they recover.

Thank you so much for that info!! I really appreciate it!! Well I've given her 20ml of water at a time with a 20ml syringe. I've done this 4 times a day for 2 or 3 days with a long crop massage each time without any real results!!?? Then I've also tube fed her when she wasn't eating when this all first began. I used a 16 or 18 catheter to do it.. just not sure at the moment which of those two it was...with a 35ml syringe. I also have a 12ml syringe that I mostly use to give her water with. Then of course I have 5ml as well as 3ml syringes that I use for the warm oil. I really have no trouble putting a tube down into the crop if necessary.. I have gotten pretty comfortable doing it. Holding her is the only problem and I have my husband hold her for me when I have to do this to her. Getting fluid down using the syringe alone is no issue at all and am able to do alone, as I've been having to do daily to get some oil and water down!! I am a nurse, so these things are regular business to me... just the anatomy is different!!

I've seriously been thinking of filling the crop pretty full with water, then massaging the crop to help thin this stuff out. Then turning her upside down and making her vomit!! The ONLY thing that has stopped me is the fear of having her aspirate. If it weren't for that....I'd have done it long ago to tell you the truth!!

At the moment I've decided to finally just go ahead and try the treatment.. the ONLY treatment I've found for a "doughy crop"!! They are claiming that it works.. and I really don't see how it would hurt anyways even if it don't work!!?? Being as I've tried all else without success, this is nearly the last straw other than the hydrate, massage and vomit truthfully!! Honestly I'm just running out of cards?? Anyway, I'm going to attach the article I'm speaking of for you to see. Just scroll down to the doughy crop section. I know it sounds rather strange.. but there's just nothing else I can find and seriously I've torn apart the internet!!
Well again thank you so much for all your time and the videos etc etc. It is much appreciated!!

Could you mix this recipe with yogurt and have her eat it?
