Help with hatching!

Ok great! I'm going to start making a brooder when some friends get here. I have to be extra careful because we have a neighbourhood sports game thing here this week and I don't want any kids sneaking off to look at the chick.

Just don't tell anybody about it. :p

You plan on leaving mom and chick together, right? Any reason they can't stay with the flock?

Maybe.... probably I'll let her have it once in a while but just to be safe I'll make a brooder. My flock isn't very nice to the broody anyways and I already showed a chick to a couple hens in my flock and they tried to peck at it. (Don't worry, they didn't)

You can't just let the hen have it every once in a while. She won't accept it. Trust me, leaving the chick with her mom unless mom doesn't want it is the best thing you can do, especially since there is only one. Other flock members pecking the chick a little in the beginning is normal - but mom will protect the chick, and they'll get used to it.

Thanks for letting me know. Sorry I'm totally new to chicks!

One of the eggs died today, @TheKindaFarmGal. It was a bit weird because half of it was covered in the steel and the other half was covered in the white covering under the shell. The chick still wasn't in hatching position and the yolk wasn't absorbed properly either. What could've happened? I'm feeling so sad right now. I know there wasn't any way to save it but it's still very sad.

I'm sorry. :hugs Do you have a pic? It sounds like it might have cracked or something, maybe smashed before it was ready to hatch. Hard to say for sure, though.
