Help with Jug in heated water bowl...

If the jug is too big and too close to edge of dish, will birds be able to reach water?

That is why I originally went with the smaller jug. That bigger jug will leave a smaller area, which I like because if those waddles but it(water) needs to be up to the top.

I just tried another jug, put the hole at the bottom edge of jug and the water just poured out. I'm presently out of jugs but will be on the hunt for different sizes in the next couple days.

Instead of wasting full size jugs trying to arrive at a workable solution, I suggest you use small plastic drinking cups and small dishes like I did. You can keep experimenting until you get it exactly right without having to use the full size jug and dish. Try to keep the proportions similar.

I wish I could find a good video to demonstrate the hydraulics and water pressure principles, but I haven't so far hit on one that pertains to this particular situation.

I think I got it. It was the cap on the jugs. Once I get that on there good, it held the water. You just got to move fast. So now I got two jugs and both are working so far. I got one in the house as a test and one outside. If need be I can put a second one outside. They are using the heated water bottle in the coop.

That'll be tricky!

Great! Glad you finally got the kinks ironed out. Here's a slightly different solution that you might want to consider.
Love the high speed surges here....but that router setup is incredibly dangerous<cringes>
