I have never shown a bird before, but my blue wheaten roo is just about perfect so I am now giving it some thought. I am in California and I have no idea what I need to do to prepare. I've read that standard for Ameraucanas, and he TOTALLY fits the bill with no disqualifications. I will have pics up tomorrow - today the pens were so muddy it would have been embarassing to post pics

Any information is appreciated.

AZ Poultry Assocaition is doing their show in Casa Grande on the 27 & 28th. I SO want to go and take a pair of Blue Wheaten Ams and my BBL Polish.... but my wife set us up to be youth leaders for a handcart trek in July and that weekend is the first "training weekend".

Guess I'll have to wait till next time. It would have been so much fun... of course I don't even know where to order the little numbered leg tags that they require you to put on you chickens for the show.

Oh Well, Hopefully there will be another on soon.

I can't wait to see the pic! I LOVE Blue Wheaten Ameraucana's...especially the roos!!! I will someday have one!!!

Debi...next time I am over at your house, you know I have to go find him and snuggle him, right? ha ha (as long as he doesn't try to spur me).

Actually showing the bird is not hard, it is the prep work , Bathing is not diffucult just time consuming.

I would gather Baby Shampoo, baby oil, a small nail brush and some fabric softener

I bath mine in the spare bathroom, once they are good and wet, lather and work it through the feathers. Then rinse, I do a final rinse with water & softener. I then wrap them in a towel and let them sit for a bit. Then Blow dry, this part takes awhile, as you dry you can fluff the feathers. The nail brush it great for scrubbing legs and feet.

I leave them inside in a tote on clean shavings overnight.

When you are at the show you need to go over the bird, make sure feathers are fluffed and in place, you can oil the comb, wattles and legs of the bird (I used the baby oil gel and used very sparingly on legs)

I always got mine to the show the day before showing. Many people that show bring a jug of water from home and have vitamins/electrolytes mixed in it.

They usually block the entire aisle while judging, so you will not be able to really tell how you did until after the judge is done.
