So one of my Dominques who if 7 months old, hen and is one of 7 free range girls I have presented yesterday with a "bubbly" eye, nasla discharge and a little open mouth breathing. SO I brought her in last night and she was active and eating/drinking. This morning there was a lot of normal poop in the crate and she wanted to come out so she was/is very snugglie today and VERY tired. She is not really pooping or eating much today just sleeping. But she has no ocular or nasal discharge today but she does have a mild odor.

Is this a self limiting cold/virus or should I be more concerned and try to get her on antibiotics etc...

We live around a lot of woods and they are free range but they do not come in contact with other chickens.

Thanks for your help!

yikes! Get her on some antibiotics right away. Tylan or duramaycin asap! and quarantine her right away!

She now has diarrhea........I am hesitant to put her on antibiotics but she is separated from the rest of the flock. Thank you and I will continue the nursing care.

Chickens don't get colds. Many of their respiratory diseases are viral so antibiotics have no effect. Also, many are incurable, the chicken remains a carrier for life, and some are even passed along in the egg. I would never give a chicken an antibiotic for these symptoms.

Reacting to every thing that comes up with anti-biotics simply causes mutations of the various bugs, infections, and diseases, I'm afraid. We only have ourselves to blame for creating these "super bugs", it seems. I'm glad you posted this, Judy.
