Help with pendulous, or spastic crop

Hi everyone!

I have been caring for a one-year old Speckled Sussex hen that has pendulous, or spastic crop. I ask anyone with experience with pendulous, or spastic crop to please offer some guidance. This is my first experience with this crop issue and I would like to know if there is anything else I can do to bring her some relief.

Here is the background:

About 6 weeks ago, I noticed that her crop was not emptying overnight. Her crop was big, like an orange. I realized that this issue had probably been happening for a while, but I had not caught it! I am not sure when it started. I tried to recall her crop before I noticed the issue, she always looked like she had eaten alot. There was never cause for concerned since she was not acting sick and was always very active.

Once I noticed, I kept her isolated in an adjacent smaller coop/run to her flock for 10 days and monitored her crop, her poops and her egg laying habits. Initially, I treated her for what I thought was an impacted crop. I gave her coconut oil and crop massages every few hours. She had access to water, but no food for the first 4 days. During these first 4 days of withholding food, there was no change. During this time I also started treating her for sour crop (Monistat regime as described in other posts) as there was some odor coming from her mouth. The smell went away with the treatment.

On day 4, I started to give her a few teaspoons of wet crumbles and a small amount of scrambled eggs and continued to feed her daily but sparingly. There was no improvement on the size of her crop. Her crop never fully emptied.

Unlike other hen's that I've treated with impacted crop or sour crop, this hen was active and acted like nothing was wrong. She was very vocal and rather upset that she could not be with her flockmates. She laid an egg the 2nd, 3rd and again on the 7th day. But she would only poop 2x /day and another poop overnight--always a very small quantity of poop. I also noticed that she would bob her head alot-- perhaps to adjust her crop?

Seeing no real improvement, I searched the posts and found out about pendulous, or spastic crop. Her symptoms fit. I learned that it was a chronic condition and that hens cope with this condition, but might have frequent issues with sour crop. She seemed to be coping fairly well, besides looking uncomfortable. I debated keeping her isolated for longer but let her back to the main coop/run because she was hurting herself trying to go back to her flock.

The next week, I monitored her and her crop did not empty. She was still acting normal but looking uncomfortable. Her crop got very big closer to a large orange. I wanted to do more to help her and I searched the posts and found folks suggesting a crop bra. I made the one with vet tape. I went through several iterations of the vet tape crop bra trying to make one that was more durable and that she could not take off. In searching the posts someone suggested getting a crop bra off of Etsy and I ordered one for her. I was really excited to order the Etsy crop bra because in the reviews, folks said that it helped their chickens empty their crops completely. I was very hopeful.

Well she has been wearing her Etsy crop bar every day for two weeks now, but there is no change. Her crop remains huge. The Etsy bra covers her crop and seems to fit well under her wings. She does pick at it and often due to her doing her normal chicken activities her crop pops out of the side. However, I check the fit daily, and adjust it as needed throughout the day. She seems to be slowing down. She is more uncomfortable now. I feel helpless and I want to help her feel better and get her crop to empty.

My questions:

Is there anything else I can do to help her crop empty? I do not want to make her vomit to avoid the aspiration risk.

What is your experience with crop bras? Have you had these help with emptying the crop or reducing the size?

I appreciate any suggestions! Thank you.

Do you have photos of her and her poop?
I was not able to catch a photo of her poop this morning, but here are a few of her:

I will try to get a picture of her poop soon.

My goodness!
The poor girl. I'm going to tag in @azygous to see if she has some tips.

Does the crop bra push up enough for you to be able to tell if it's helping the crop to empty?
Thank you!

The crop bra covers her crop and gives her some support. I don't think it pushes it up too much. She has been wearing it for 2 weeks and it has not emptied.

Crop bras don't fit in just one adjustment. It can take several days to get it just right. I would cinch the bra up a tad so the crop rides higher. Then check the crop in the morning to see if it's emptied.

If the crop hasn't emptied, cinch the bra up a tiny bit higher. Check in the morning again. If the crop is empty, it means the bra is just right.

I just ran out to the coop to adjust the velcro part to be higher on her back. The neck part is not adjustable.

I will report back in the morning.

Thank you for the suggestion.

Unfortunately, she managed to undo the velcro in the back during the night and when I went to see her she had the back untied. I adjusted it again, cinching it up higher as suggested and I will update tomorrow.

I want to note that I have to adjust the bra every time I go out to see her as it moves around during her normal activity. Tonight I will do my best to make sure it is very secure and cinched up since she moves less when she roosts and night time would be ideal to allow her crop to empty.

I am very grateful for your help

I wanted to give an update.

Wednesday night: She wore her crop bra all day and I cinched the back up a little more at night.

Thursday morning: She wore her crop bra all night. I did not notice a change in the size. But once I opened the coop she walked out and pooped. This was a bigger poop than I had seen from her. This made me hopeful.

In the afternoon, I cinched the crop bra up a little more. She was moving slowly today. I worried that the the back might be a little tight but I let her be.

At night, I checked the fit and adjusted it. I made sure it stayed on tight. But I noticed that I can't cinch the crop bra any tighter, the velcro strap is now as tight as it can go across her back.

Friday morning: She wore her crop bra all night. No change to the size of her crop. She has been alot less active today. It's raining so they don't want to go out to the uncovered run. She is not moving much and closes her eyes for periods of time.

Do I need another type of crop bra? The one I hade only has one adjustable velcro back strap. Do I need one that allows me to adjust the sides? So that the crop gets pulled up more?

I am attaching a picture of her poop on Thursday morning and pictures of her crop bra. Does this look like its pulling up enough? The crop bra is on a tight as I can make it.

Thank you.

I don't think there's anything wrong with the bra. It should have had some effect by now. That there hasn't been any improvement indicates a possible obstruction, maybe a tumor.

She's sounds like she's getting weak from hunger. Unfortunately, when the crop won't empty, nutrients aren't getting into the intestines to be absorbed. Tube feeding her probably wouldn't accomplish anything since the crop won't empty.

Her outlook is dim. What I would do right now is to give her two teaspoons of molasses in a half cup of warm water to drink. This will accomplish two things. One is to raise her glucose level and give her a boost of energy. The other is to stimulate the intestines hopefully to draw some of the crop contents down.

Be sure to keep plain water and grit available, too.

We're approaching "hail mary time". If miracles are possible, here's a good opportunity for one.
