Ok what do I do now??? She had been sitting on eggs for a while but none hatched. We had given up hope and then woke up this morning to this little one.. does anyone have any tips?

Isn't it gorgeous :-D

Where's the mama then? Give it to her if she's still sensitive to babies. Otherwise, get a feather duster, the natural kind and place it with her.

Mama is with her.. I have cordened off an area of the coop.. 'Roger' is now happily eating chick crumb and water.. and keeping warm with mummy.. now going to see if any of the others will hatch :-D

How exciting! You did the right thing by separating her from the others and predators. Now all you have to do is supply chick feed and water. Don't use a bowl for water as the chicks can drown in it. All you have to do is let nature do her thing and enjoy the show!

How precious!! What a nice surprise for you! Mama hens and their babies are so much fun to watch!! Enjoy! :)

Actually, many people also allow the mama to raise the chick in with the flock, so when she quits being a mama, the chicks are already integrated. Personal choice. Mine all grew up together. The mama will protect the chicks from any hostile adults if her instincts are good.

Oh yes! I agree with this post. My hen raised her chicks with the flock and she was one protective mama! If any other animal she saw as a threat to her peeps came within a fifteen foot radius, she was off chasing them, another hen even joined in to help protect! :)

my Mama hen is ferocious protecting her chicks from the other flock members; the other flock members do not seem phased by the chicks at all - the only reason I have to separate them is that the babies seem to find ALL the little escape holes I thought I had closed! so I have a 'baby-proof' area that they are in right now but as soon as they have grown a little I will let them back together. It is amazing watching the 'littles' when they are truly out in the world.
