HELP!! Wrong end pip?!?! (Oh No! Complications!!!)

Sometimes chicks can be really mean! It's frustrating, but they seem to outgrow it after awhile. See if you can get a red lamp or something you can fit over your existing lamp to make the light red. Maybe that will help.

Keep an eye on Blue, see if she's eating and drinking. (Though she may not be interested in either yet, being so young still.) As long as she can manage that she's got a fighting chance.

She fell alseep in her little box. I think the most important thing for her right now is rest. I offered her some water, but she didnt seem interested, so i let her just sit in her box and sleep. She has had a very hard 3 hours of life!!

I hope she perks up and feels better tomorrow. Poor little thing...

Im crossing my fingers, Ill keep everyone updated

I am so glad to hear your wrong end piper/cracked egg made it!!! That's wonderful! As for your blue guy, I have noticed that the odd balls get pecked on. In our hen group the EEs get attacked on their muffs and in our chick group our Marans get attacked for feathers on their legs. I think some toes pecking is normal but ours actually drew blood. It sounds to me like #1 is a roo or at least assuming that role. Congrats on your hatch!!!

I have been reading this thread as I sit in my "brooder" room, formerly my craft room, with 22 eggs on day 21. This is my 2nd hatch, my first was 6 chocolate orp bantams that the post office sent to New Jersey on their trip from California to Oregon, 2 out of 6 hatched, 1 wrong end died. My surviving chick, Fudge, who took 4 hours from first pip to exit is in a brooder right next to the incubator. When I first thought I heard chirping from the bator I looked at her & she was just looking towards the incubator with her head tipped, confirming the chirp. My first pip, on a lavender orp egg from JC Hinks, occurred within the last couple of hours. Guess I am up for the night. I don't think I will be able to wait out all 22 eggs.

It is reassuring to have BYC forum to go to for answers to my middle of the night questions. I want to congratulate Reurra on her hatch, I never realized it would be this hard. When I asked for chickens for Christmas (again) my DH finally said yes but "they are your chickens, I'm not having anything to do with them". Then when my little chocolate was about 2 days old he said I wish she wasn't too little to hold & I told him he could pick her up, well, there went my best chicken (I also have 7 feed store chicks, 6 buff orps & 1 red sex link. But Fudge is now his & he is hers. He is becoming chicken guy, actually just poked his head in, wondering where I was.

But I want to thank all of you whose expertise I have relied on & those of you who have asked my questions so I could read all the great advise. You all make me feel sane about this whole chicken thing. So thanks and good hatching. Pam

Hi Pam, I've read a few stories here about husbands who wanted nothing to do with the chickens only to fall hard for the little fluffy butts. My favourite was a story I read recently about the DH who took one look at the chicks and went out and build them a chicken palace! Mine wasn't keen on my adventure as his last flock got destroyed by a dog

But I got him back on board with me now and he's often the one carrying the little ones around and the first at the brooder if they complain too much!

Good luck with your hatch and let us know how it goes!

Good morning!

Everyone is fine so far.

I have a DH story too. When all this started my husband was sceptical. he adamantly said "No birds in the house!" But of course I ahd to have the brooder in the house, so he helped my build a big one, and they sit behind his lazy boy. That was last year. This year i wanted some cornish chicks, well , he was patient again and hauled mne halfway across the province to get them. He ponied up the dough to get the incubator too, he grumbled about it, but was accomodating. Then last night when i was fretting over little blue, I told him what was happening.

I told him how she was lonely if I put her in a box by herself because I needed her to get stronger before putting her in with the others. (I think #1 is a roo too, more on that later) So he offered to hold her until I got the right box set up, and while i was doing that, he asked if I had a small mirror to put in so she would not be lonely. I told him I didnt...so he sat and talked to blue and thought while i got the box finished. And as I was about to put her in the box, he pulled out an old CD and asked if it would work as a mirror. It worked perfectly! She snuggled the mirror all night.

So yeah, he fell in love with little blue.

As for #1, I think youre right, it must be a roo. He charges, is very bold, loves to climb and at this age is a bit of a bully. He eats like a horse, has to stand in the middle of the feeder too lol.

One of my chicks, I think its #4, is not standing so well, even after being 2 days old. She is acting just like my poor Stumpy. She stands very little and is usually sitting down. Never complains, is bright eyes and alert, but very weak and wobbly on the legs. Stumpy would be her uncle, so Im wondering if theres a genetic correlation here.

Little blue is now in with the others. She pecks at anyone who pecks her, so shes doing much better. She still doesnt stand so well, and soemtimes they catch her off guard and bite her toes. Her feet are grey with pink tips, an irresistible combo! So you know they have to peck it. Im going to get a red bulb today. The brooder lamp is just a 120w bulb and its about 10 inches above the floor, they stay quite warm in there. I eep it covered with blankets to hold the heat in,
