Help! young chicks are sneezing and....

Hi Everyone..

So based on the above posts..I know I should give my sneezing chick Duramycin-10.. however I'm nervous because she is so young I got her from the Feed store yesterday (along with two other little ladies) Im guessing they are about a week old.. will the antibiotics be too strong for her? and will it be okay if the chicks who arent sneezing to drink the same water with the Duramycin-10 in it?

THanks!
Okay...is the sneezing chick showing any other symptoms? This needs be taken one step at a time. First, isolate the sneezing chick from the rest of the flock. You need to see if this is enviromental or if it truly is sickness. Second, please post symptoms that may also be showing. Was she eating and drinking readily? Was she acting normal? Or was she standing by herself, hunched up, with her eyes closed? Pictures and more info would help us help you better. I would hate to tell you to just give an antibiotic for nothing. It's always good to have it on hand, just in case, but you won't always need it. Here's the list I always ask for when trying to help. Litter? Feed? Any vitamins or other suppliments? Where are they? Temperature of their brooder? What do their poops look like?

Thank you so much for responding! I noticed her sneeze about 10 minutes after picking her up from the feed store. I havent noticed any gooey eyes or runny nose. She has been totally alert, eating, walking around, peeping, and pooping. Her poop has seemed a little on the runny side (Im not totally sure though since this is only my second time with chicks. Right now I have shelf liner as the base of their brooder and just put the bedding that tracker supply guy had in their initial packing crates in their with them. As soon as I got them, I supplied them with the vitamin solution pack that I received when I ordered chicks from Meyer Hatchery (Vital Pack)

Its about 85 degrees in their brooder (tupperware tub). Ill take pictures of her and perhaps her poo when I get home from work.

How often is it sneezing and are all of them sneezing? Lose the bedding they came with, you'd do better with paper towels until you can get a block of shavings. You do not know who has touched it, what's in it, etc.. It should be clean but I've seen some funny stuff at TS. You need to make sure it's not an environmental issue first, then how often they are sneezing and how many of them are sneezing. An antibiotic at this age can be done if it is necessary, but it's much better to rule out all of the possibilities first, quickly, so that if it is something starting up you can hit it early.

You haven't said if you are doing medicated feed or not, if you are you don't want to give them the vitamins for more than a day at most. It messes up the ability of the amprolium to do it's job and keep the coccidia numbers down.

Hi there,

This may have already been covered a thousand times...however I must ask as I get headaches from reading and am unable to do much research and reading online...Here is my dilemma...
I purchased Silkie hatching eggs from two different people and hatched them in my incubator...then when they were 4 days old, I had another person bring over eggs for me to hatch for her. So she comes from a farm with birds and I showed her my chicks...I think I may have made a mistake and ruined my biosecurity by having another bird person come into my house and near my birds...then a couple of days later when they were about a week or so old, the chicks started to sneeze, head shake and ear scratch...they are eating and drinking and pooping just fine and chirping away like happy 3 week old chicks now...I haven't had chicks ever do any of these things...sneeze, head shake, ear scratch, not ever before. I don't know what might be wrong with them...I changed their bedding from pine shavings to newspaper shredds, I treated half with dusting powder and diluted ivomec and the other half with poultry protector and still they are doing all three of those things. They are in my house right now as I dont want them near my laying hens. Does anyone know what might be causing this or has anyone dealt with such young birds having these three symptoms? I should mention too that I do not vaccinate or medicate any of my birds. Any ideas would really help as I need to get these guys outside soon but don't want to infect the other flock. Please let me know your thoughts on this. TIA
