Hello! Thank you for adding me!!!! I just moved to NC. We bought property for my horses. I wanted chickens for eggs. I got some( they said they are just backyard chickens) I am almost positive 1 is a rooster. Now this is the question. I am soooo new to this for chickens. I have a chicken coop they are in the garage right now,( cause to me it's cold) I am wondering what is a temp that I can let them out of the garage to roam? It is gonna be like 60 today. If I leave the garage door open will they just roam the yard and then come back to the garage? I know this may sound stupid, but they are my loves, I don't want anything to happen to them or they get lost. I am probably goin about all this the wrong way, so I am asking for help! Please

If you chickens are over 12 weeks old then it is fine for your flock to go roam the yard but it sounds like you should observe them for a wile to set yourself at ease ..


Yes they should go back into the garage but you can also help them out .
 
Welcome to Backyard chickens. Are your chickens - adults or baby chicks? If they are adults they can be let outside on any day. If they don't like the weather they will go back to the coop.

I am a little confused, is the garage their coop? Or do you have a separate coop outside? If you keep the chickens locked inside the coop for 2 or 3 days -( with food & water) they will imprint on the coop as their home & will return to it, when you do let them out. If you free range them outdoors some of them may be taken by predators and won't return. If you have a large, outdoor run for them they will be more protected.

You can check out the predator threads for information on preventing attacks etc. and the coop section for ideas on good builds. The Learning Center will answer most of your questions. The search box is a great shortcut - for instance put your state name in the search box and it will pop up with your state thread. If you post there, you may find you have other bycers in your area who will be inclined to assist you.
 
Hi Doreen.....If you've had your chickens in the garage for a few days they'll know that's where to go back to. I live in Wyoming and we allow our chickens to come and go out of their coop whenever they want regardless of weather conditions. They're pretty smart when it comes to keeping themselves dry, warm, cool, etc. Ours wander out even when it's really cold outside. They don't even mind wandering around on fresh snow as long as it's not too deep. So you should be safe. Good luck Girl!!
