Poor little thing.

Flush with saline or diluted Betadine. Trim the feathers around the wound to keep the wound cleaner. Apply some triple antibiotic ointment or Vetericyn to the wound.

Personally, I would not stitch the wound, it should heal nicely on it's own.

See that she is eating/drinking well and add some poultry vitamins to her water (Poultry Nutri-Drench, Rooster Booster Poultry Cell, etc.). Offer her some extra protein like egg or tuna in addition to her chick starter.

If you haven't done so, keep her separated so she can heal. Ideally, if she is not lethargic, place her near the other chicks so she doesn't become a stranger. A dog crate or kennel works well for this.

Keep us posted.

Thank you for responding. My son-law came and put in a couple of stitches we treated it with vectricyn and he is in a dog crate. Also gave him some drench. I am going to keep him in our house today I am worried about flies getting on it.

The little guy is doing well, but he was crying in a way that I didn't know chickens could. We figured out he was missing the other chicks so we brought in one of the little hens same age to keep him company. He's not crying anymore and so far she is not bothering his wound. Not sure how long to keep him separated?

I'm glad to hear he is doing well. Bringing in a friend was a good idea, this makes it less stressful.

I would try to get them both back with their flockmates or at least near their flockmates as soon as possible.

If you have room where the others are being kept, and can make a barrier or set up a dog kennel/crate to place him in at least during the day so he can be near the others that would work well.

Once the wound scabs over, you can apply some Blu Kote to help hide the wound, let that dry, then apply your Vetericyn.

Hopefully he will recover soon and can be back with his "friends".

:goodpost:

Keep the friend with him and return when the wound is not bloody. Blu kote is very good for this but wear a latex or nitrol glove so that you do not paint your hand blue!

reapply when the blu kote fades(on the chicken of course):thumbsup

I have used Blu-Kote directly on an open wound. Did not harm the bird, similar situation you have. I keep it stocked and on hand since we also keep cattle and goats. And yes, really easy to ruin clothes and dye your hands lol!
