Help.

Hello so my chicken Rebel has a broken leg. I walked up to there coop this afternoon and found her on the ground when she finally got up she had her leg curled up to her body and she is hoping when she walks. What are we supposed to do to help her. I am really worried but i don't want to put her down unless there are no other ways. Please help.

Did you feel it? Might just be strained. Stains seem to work themselves out with time. Breaks need more help. Look it over real good and try to figure out where it's hurting her.

Ok my mom told me when she felt the hens leg that is was definitely broke. So what should i do. ?

Splinting can be done with padding, popsicle sticks or other stiff support, and vet wrap. But it is important to realign the broken bones before and during splinting to make sure the bones grows back straight. Vet wrap can be put on too tight, especially if there is a lot of swelling, and it can be dangerous if circulation is cut off.

A callas forms where the broken ends heal. It can take several weeks for a broken bone or sprain to heal. Upper leg breaks are much harder to heal than lower leg bones.

A vet would be best for an xray and more expertise. After splinting, you can place her in a dog crate with food and water, or make her a chicken sling. Here is a good link to read with pictures and advice on splinting:

I forgot to mention that if you do not splint, it would be best to keep her in a dog crate or sling (or both,) so she doesn’t get attacked or hurt it more. Here is a picture of the skeleton to figure out which bone seems broken:

Try returning the leg where it snapped back in position and make a splint and tie it up with a small rope. Or, depending on the injury, get a straw and split it in two pieces so the leg can fit inside and then just secure it with tape. If the chicken is in pain, stop. Don't force it, instead take it to the vet. I hope this helps.

Thanks everyone so much for your help we have a splint on her now and she is separated from the other hens. So thank you so much but now all i can do is hope that she gets better thank you.

Keep us posted on how she is doing. Check her foot often while it is splinted, to make sure the circulation is good, and the foot is warm.
