So we recently had a rooster randomly started hanging around in our yard and we don’t know where it came from. After about a week or two we got it some food and started putting it out for him. Now it’s been about a month and two nights ago it started roosting on the rocking chair on our porch. The only problem with this is the crowing at 3 or 4 in the morning and cleaning his droppings. Does anyone have suggestions plz

The question is: do you want to keep him? If so, he would need a secure and big enough coop and run and some hens to keep him company.

If you rather not keep him, try to find a new home for him on Craig's List or maybe hang a note at the blackboard in your nearest feed store etc.

We like him. But we don’t want chickens. He actually is getting along great with our dog and cat. He came up by himself and we don’t force him to stay it just seems like he is content. How big of a coop would one rooster need

Can you post some pictures of him? Is he a bantam or rather standard size?

hi Bbrowder, welcome on this forum.

If you want to keep the rooster without poop on you’re porch every night , you really need to make/buy a coop where he sleeps.

Most simple solution:
If you let him free range, pick him up after dark and put him in this coop further away from you’re house . Put him on a roost. And close the coop until the next morning for safety reasons.

If you want the rooster to go in the coop by himself you need to train him or make a real setup with several hens and a run.

A small coop is good enough for one rooster. How big is this rooster ?
Make sure he can sleep on the roost without touching the walls and you need space above his head for the ventilation.

If you buy a prefab coop you probably need to add more ventilation. .

My idea was to build a coop for him to perch. So he is safe and also feels safe. But I don’t want to lock him up as he has survived this long on his on. I just want an idea for him to perch somewhere other than the porch.

He is not small. I think it may be a road island red. Something tried to get him at some point because most of his tail feathers are gone.

To keep him safe in his future coop he needs to be locked up at night, or else being in the open coop would be like a trap, since he would not have an escape in case a predator comes in to pick him off the roost.
