Help!

I just caught my rooster mating with one of my pullets! She didn't start laying yet! Since he had chosen her, does that mean she is close to laying? If she does begin to lay, should I watch for fertile eggs?

If she's squatting for him then she's probably going to lay soon. Does she squat when you reach for her?

Honestly, I'm not sure what the problem is. Roosters and hens (pullets) mate. Yes, that will probably result in fertile eggs. That's what happens when roosters and hens are together.

If I touch their backs they squat down then hurry up and away.

Sounds like shes about to start laying and if there is a rooster in the yard they will be fertile. Lucky for you fertile eggs are just as ymmy as unfertile ones.

A randy rooster will mate with a hen weather she's laying or not. A true guide to wether your pullet is ready to lay is how well developed her comb and wattles are.
