Hi Everyone, I am so pleased to be joining your community. We are having a problem with one of our Buff Orpington's. She's going on 9 months old and has been behaving very strangely this last week. I'm not sure if she's broody or if its something else. She has always liked to lay her eggs under the nesting boxes as opposed to in the boxes and she just wants to stay in her spot all day. When we get her to come out into the main area she will eat and drink but she keeps fluffing out her feathers and is making a strange hiccupping noise. If any one has any advice that they can give, I'd be so very grateful.... P.S. She hasn't been laying and also we do not have a rooster in the flock.

Check out the Emergencies thread. I'll bet someone there can help you!

Thanks! I've read through a lot of posts but haven't yet found one that matches. I'll keep trying!

Hello! We have two buffs, and one went broody just before winter. Stopped getting out of the nest box, and stopped laying. We had to physically move her to get her to eat and drink, and for her to get out of the coop. Not sure about the hiccups, though, but it sounds like a broody hen to me.

Don't panic, but monitor her eating and drinking. Force her to get exercise if you can. We had to close the coop door to keep her from going back in. Watch for calluses or feather loss on her chest (where she sits). Ours would puff up and bristle every time we got near her, or opened the nest box door.

There are lots of broody hen threads here. I'm sure she will be fine. Best wishes!

As a side note, buffs are known to be broody. Ours JUST started laying again (after at least 3 month hiatus, maybe longer).

Broody hens can sit on air, or rocks, or golf balls etc., and try to hatch them. They don't want to leave the nest and if bothered will puff up and sometimes screech & peck to guard her real or imaginary eggs. Whether real or imaginary, you have to get her to take some breaks to eat, drink and poo.

Thanks so much for the information. So happy to be part of this community!
