Help?

The vet also said he had an enlarged liver BUT said that may have been caused from the euthanasia medication

I've personally removed about 300ccs from, my bird at one time, but that was only due to a severe case. I'd recommend starting out with 100cc's- wait two hours and see how she's doing, and if while you're draining, she starts getting droopy or not acting well, stop immediately. I'd suggest giving her some electrolytes between draining sessions, as well. Gatorade or something like that to pep her up and replace she fluids she's lost. If she's doing okay, I'd recommend you take another 50ccs or so out, and so on. It's a personal choice of whether you change the needle each time or simply sterilize it and use the same needle (since you're using it on the same bird, you should be fine).

I honestly don;t know about heart issues. I've been told birds with heart issues can;t really be treated without a vet, and to simply enjoy them while you've got them. Like I said, though, some people report various success with utilizing milk thistle in stopping the asceties from reoccurring. I'd put a band of electrical tape around her leg, so she stand out in your flock and you can periodically check her out. If it re-occurs again, you'll need to drain it again, and if milk thistle doesn't work,. I'm out of ideas. :(

But I have bird who've had asceities and are doing just fine- I just drain the fluid periodically, and otherwise, they live happy lives with me. If you can't fix the problem (heart or liver), treat the symptoms and play it by ear.

But yeah- remove the fluid, try and fix her with milk thistle, but if you can't, just drain her as she does. Hope things work ut! :)

Ok, with milk thistle, does she need to be by herself too? How long will we need to give it to her? And how much?
