Molpet, yes, the hose is connected low on the barrel and there is a lot of volume above the outlet for water to back up in. of course there might be an occasion when we get a really hard downpour. but if I know it is coming I can always drain either barrel no.1 or no.2 or both..
like the weather dork gets it right lol

the rain goes from the gutters to down the spout into barrel no.1. when it gets full the water goes through the overflow tube into barrel no.2. when no.2 gets full the water goes through the overflow tube and drops into barrel no.3. when no.3 gets filled up to the outlet. the water goes through the hose to a sloped area of the yard and flows away from the house.
there are also spigots at the bottom of no.1 and no.2 so I can connect a hose and drain the barrels or water the raised beds of tomatoes.

I want rain barrels, but I don't have gutters.

I didn't have gutters. cannot have them.
had them years ago. but after putting them back onto the house for the third time, I just left them off.
the snow sliding off of the roof takes them down.
the gutters themselves are not expensive.
the accessories are where the cost accumulates.
I lucked out and all of my barrels were free.
two of them I got from my regular mechanic.
they originally had windshield washer fluid in them.
very easy to rinse out.
I would not have installed the rain barrels if it were just to collect water for the garden. but their primary reason is to direct water away from the house foundation.

Here's the fish I am working on...
