Helping the Runt Grow

Do raw oats and oatmeal have the same effect? I don't think they like oatmeal, only raw chopped oats.

What do you mean by "raw" oats? What kind did you buy exactly?

Oatmeal (Quaker Oats) are actually pre-cooked (steamed and rolled). Steel cut oats are raw as is the crimped oats sold at feed stores. I just give them uncooked oatmeal with some water on it though do cook it for tiny chicks.

Hey! You guys were all so helpful before so I wonder if you could help me again. This same runt, she seems to do this thing where she stuffs her face as full as she can, tiptoes away, drools and spits everything out, and then she try’s to eat the food she just spat up. Then she waddles back to reload again. Is this normal, just her being a bit greedy but not being big enough, or something I should look into? Thanks!

I feed them without watering them most days. Plain oats and raisins, it was a farewell snack to my rooster Dragon because he loved pecking the girls in the face so he could get them first. As I'm saying this I feel less sad about revoking him lol. But if your bird can't eat, it sounds like a disorder with her crop mabey it can't store food how its supost to, and that's why she isn't gaining weight?

Agree with the other comments, something is wrong. I have never seen a chicken throw up ever, certainly not from over-eating. Guessing she has something wrong with her crop or esophagus and she is likely not able to digest enough food which is why she keeps "reloading". Quite possibly a birth defect.

Have you tried feeding her food with the consistency of soft pudding? See if she could keep that down.

Actually, this is similar to what happened during the stressful week when we thought she was sick. Her crop is emptying normally and it’s filling up, a little watery, but it is. I’ll try and feed her some other foods. What can I make that is pudding consistency? Also, it only happens when her mouth is too full. Mostly wth clovers, actually. She puts so much in her mouth she has leaves hanging out of it, and then she spits it up and eats it. I don’t think a vet is an option.

Yeah I don't think a vet would help either. Honestly even if they could figure out what is causing this they likely couldn't fix it since it doesn't sound like any sort of infection.

So does she usually keep food down? And only occasionally throws up when she overeats? If so that is different and I wouldn't worry about giving her liquefied foods.
