Helping the Swedish Flower Hen

I would be interested in helping. We are trying to get a flock started, but out of four batches of eggs from various parts of the country, only 12 eggs hatched, 10 were roos and one of the females died. We will be looking for more pullets at the Eastern Poultry Congress in January (Springfield, MA). I can help with translating from Swedish to English, if needed.

You may be my new best friend.

I've been trying to collect as much information as I can on the breed and its history and have been relying on translation software to help me. I have a contact at the Swedish Genebank who has been helping with some questions and thankfully they speak some English. I just worry things will get lost in translation sometimes.

Wonderful to meet you!

Just want to personally thank Leigh, for all that she does for this breed, and all the other peeps I have learned from as I am 13 weeks into ownership and exposure to this wonderful breed. I was warned, and have been addicted to them since the very first pip from one of Leighs eggs. I realize this thread has gone dormant, and I check back often to the SFH thread.. but am so happy to have jumped into this wonderful, entertaining, landrace, eyecandy, free range lovin breed. I hope I can become half as knowledgeable as all of you!

Thanks all! and if it still makes a difference to anyone who may be counting.....

This may not be the right place to post this, but I'm going to give it a shot. I'm interested in raising some of this breed, they seem like such an awesome breed!

Where did y'all get hatching eggs? I've seen chicks at Greenfire Farms, is there anyone selling hatching eggs? I'm going to check Ebay today and see what's going on there.

I am the very happy owner of 8 SFH chicks age 14 wks to 4 weeks with another 8 eggs on their way from member Bulldogma who posted just above us. You can find her and lots of peeps on the main Swedish Flower Hen thread who have Hatching Eggs for sale. Bulldogma has quite an extensive variance of lines available and I can hatch eggs from them when they mature somewhere down the very long road of winter!!!!

Good Luck and welcome to the addiction!

I found several people selling eggs on ebay for less than Greenfire was charging. Unfortunately, I ended up with only 2 hens (one of which was sickly and died young) and many roosters. They are beautiful and sweet chickens.

Please be cautious about buying hatching eggs off eBay. While Greenfire Farms is wonderful and has done great things for many breeds, they tend to send extra chicks of other breeds to folks who then assume they have only the breed they ordered. A lot of folks have had unfortunate experiences buying eggs off eBay that hatch into chicks with non-Swedish Flower Hen qualities... clearly mixes.

Yes - check on the Swedish Flower Hen thread - you'll find plenty of people who have hatching eggs (myself included).

And Mela... you make me blush! LOL!

Sharing eggs around SE of Seattle - and yes, spreading word that we need to not reproduce the split wing or sprung comb flaws. My friends are really enjoying them, but it's hard to know what to feed and what to watch for with a landrace...

I live in Carson City, Nevada and have 4 Roosters and 2 Hens. One of the Roosters and one of my Hens is from my first batch of chicks. The other three Roosters and One Hen is from the second batch. I purchased them from Blue House Farms in North Carolina. They are beautiful birds.
