helppp! baby chick with neurological problem?? =/

Just out of curiosity, if all of the birds are on the same diet, why would only one show a vitamin deficiency?

My opinion is that it's more of a genetic predisposition among certain crested strains and that vitamin therapy can aid in brain development.

Every thing I have been able to find keeps relating this back to silkies of polish. The chick that is having the problem is a month old Orpington who was perfectly fine yesterday.

She is not sleeping on her head anymore. She seems to be ok in coordination with walking and eating. If she gets startled or if you pick her up and set her down she does a somersault - a tuck and roll head first. She walks fine but has just the slightest curl to her neck. I am beginning to think she was knocked on her head somehow, mostly because she is better not worse this afternoon.

Yes, it's more common in polish and silkies, but I have also seen it in other chick breeds. You will need to seperate it immediately. Run to the store, buy some Polyvisol drops( you can buy this anywhere--grocery storem, walmart, etc in the infant or meds section). You will administer 1/4 dropperful 2x a day for the first few days...it looks horrible when they do this and scary, but easily cured. I have never seen a chick die from wry neck and all have recovered when given the drops consistently. Give him his own warm area with food and water. Be careful to only give him a small dish for water as they can drown while in their, "seizure like state."

Yep, that's wry neck. They can be fine looking and then you go to touch them or startle them and their head will go between their knees and they will wlk backwards or flip over, etc. You need to get it on Polyvisol drops right away and it will be fixed! Good luck!

okay I have the same problem but mine is on an ameraucana that hatched 2 weeks ago. we moved all the others to a different brooder. this poor little thing is pittiful. I have been giving poly vi sol for 3 days now. it can walk eat but cannot drink I have to dip its beak yesterday I could have swared it had a seizure. it flipped and flopped and shook ended up on its back laid there for about 5 min and then back on its belly. the poor thing will be standing and next thing you look and its head is flat on the floor with its beak facing its butt. or it is laying down with its beak point on the floor of the brooder. I dont want to cull it but dh said if it is not better he will. I have been doctoring it every since it got sick saturday. it was fine friday morning. I just don't get it they get plenty of fresh feed and water have given vitamin water once a week. to be honest it acts like it is blind finds its food by using its feet. but it does not walk into the walls. I have never had a chick act like this.

Please don't cull that baby yet! Mine sounds just like yours and it was ten days of intensive care before it could take care of itself. I am SO glad now that I gave it the chance. Follow my steps in post#7 and those offered by others and she'll do fine.

it won't even get up now it ate this morning and has been asleep every since it won't even get up now I think there is something more wrong with mine than wry neck.

well it is the trama of being hatched that does this. not all the chicks have a bad time of hatching
I always gave this treatment
do this

(A) natural probiotic wet mash with Vit E and Vit B complex added immediately
basically the chick has some nerve damage do this immediately
need neurolodigal vit E and Vit B complex for nervous disorder Also the apple cider vineager in water

(1) 2 tbsp per gallon of water till chickens are well and the 2 times a week for life

(2 immediately give the chicken 1000 mg capsule of liquid Vit E by cutting the end of the capsule and taking the vit E liquid and mix in wet mash probiotic

(2-B) total amt of capsules equals the total amt of chickens fed vit's

(3 also need to crush a vit B complex pill in tabsp and add it the chickens wet mash after it is disolved

(3-B) Do both Vit's twice today then for 7 days till you see some improvement in the chicken

(3-C) then give this to the chicken twice a week for two weeks should see much improvement

(4 generally the shock of a event like struggling to be out of the egg shell gives the chick some neurological disorder and doesn't show up for days till the routine of coping with the other chicks makes it show symptoms of the disorder

(5 today I would see if the chicken will eat a wet mash with the Vitamins E and B complex

(-B) THIS IS FOR ONE CHICKEN (multiply by the amt of chickens you have to eat this wet mash and Vitamins)

natural probiotic wet mash
2 tbp of dry crumbles
4 tbp of milk sweet, sour or buttermilk
1 tbsp of non flavored yogurt
mix good and put the
vit E liquid as directed in the wet mash
and crumble the Vit B complex tablet in a tabsp and add to the wet mash
**BESURE AND MIX VIT'S VERY GOOD IN WET MASH*** so all chickens get their share

(6 Do this twice a day for 7 days to see if the chicken is better
then do this once a day for another week then once a week for a while
this should give the nervous system some stability

(6-A) they should clean it up in 20-30 minutes

(7 you can email by PM for more information and include this inf so I remember what is happening
